Please tell me this isn't yet ANOTHER potentially brilliant ARM board that has been horribly disabled by the incredible short sightedness of it's developers in not including some kind of fast storage.

SD cards make absolutely awful hard drives, no matter how fast they are rated. And USB 2.0 is also an incredibly slow method for accessing hard drives of any sort.

So you end up with a fantastic processor with great potential but a horrible user experience because the fast processor is hobbled by stupidly slow storage.

I just don't understand why board developers keep doing this over and over and over again??

For example does it have Mpeg2 and H.265 hardware decoding ??

Once we have a proper linux version running, i would love to see an external I2S DAC (like hifi-berry)

Should be quite cheap to make - possibly via kickstarter so NRE costs of PCB making/assembly can be shared amoung many users.

If people are interested I'm willing to help with/do most of the hardware design.

I've prepared two tar archives containing a minimal 64bit ARM root filesystem for Debian Jessie (login: debian, passwd: 111111) and Ubuntu Trusty (login ubuntu, passwd: 111111). You can find the scripts for creating the root filesystems and some additional information about the tar archives here. Once the kernel image / modules and the boot loader are available for the PINE64, I'll try to build a complete image.
