Information Minimal install wireless and usb ethernet
Posted by: pfeerick - 06-28-2017, 09:26 PM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook - No Replies

WIP, this is just the skeleton.

On the minimal install of xenial linux, you will find that there is no handy network-manager to help you auto-configure stuff. However, it's not that hard to configure the wireless and usb ethernet manually once you know what the steps are Wink

Wireless

  1. Create /etc/network/interfaces.d/wlan0
  2. Create /etc/wpa-supplicant/wpa-supplicant.conf
  3. Bring the interface up

USB Ethernet
  1. Plug in the USB ethernet cable (yes, obvious, but sometimes people forget)
  2. Check what name it reserves  (ifconfig -a)
  3. Create a udev rule to make our lives easier in the future...
  4. Watch it auto connect if you have DHCP, or configure it 'normally' now via /etv/network/interfaces.d/eth0

how to install emmc in just arrived pinebook
Posted by: dkebler - 06-28-2017, 02:51 PM - Forum: Pinebook Hardware and Accessories - Replies (11)

My pinebook just arrived today.  I was expecting the 64Gb emmc to be installed instead I am starring at it.

No instructions were included and I can't find any tutorial on how to install it?

Can the pine64 folks please provide a tutorial preferably with pictures on how to do this before I open the case of my brand new machine and potentially mess it up.

Smile Pinebook Wallpapers - submissions please!

Hello everyone!

I started this thread so that those of you whom are artistically savvy can share Pinebook wallpapers as well as themes, icon sets, etc,. Just the other day a user in IRC shared a picture of his i3 desktop with a nice-looking custom Pine wallpaper and I thought it was a pity that it wouldn't get shared with the broader community.

Although I have no artistic abilities myself, and my knowledge of Gimp is what you'd call basic, I found it only fair to create some wallpapers to share since I am starting this thread (edit, those are newer / less terrible wallpapers): you will find them here. I am sure that many of you can do much much better than my lousy attempt Wink

The green wallpaper plays well with:
Mint-Y-Darker theme
Vibrancy-Dark-Green Icons

DHL delivered Pinebook with broken screen please help.
Posted by: Sudoapt-getburrito - 06-28-2017, 12:27 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook - Replies (15)

Hi everyone. DHL delivered my pinebook with a cracked lcd screen and the abs case that the Pinebook was in was in bits and pieces. I have been trying to contact Pine64 for 10 days now with no luck I have submitted 2 help tickets and have sent the 3 emails but no response. I also contacted DHL about this and they said a damage claim must be made but I can't make a claim since I'm not the shipping customer they said only syabas technology can make the claim. So here's my problem everyone I don't know what to do now I'm pretty much stuck with a 130 dollar paperweight I don't know if any of you have experience this same issue and what can be done in this case. I was super excited for my Pinebook been waiting with anticipation since 2016 but now this is just saddening. And Pine64 please ship these laptops in better packaging a flimsy abs case and a envelope is not enough protection for the way DHL is treating these packages.

  i3 Window Manager Desktop Environment
Posted by: n3rDy - 06-27-2017, 04:01 PM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook - Replies (11)

I would like to use i3 for daily use, but I am having a tough time getting it to a useful state. Others may also be having issues, so I thought I would start this thread for i3 specific questions.

I have downloaded ayufan's PineBook i3 image and put in on a SD card. It boots fine into i3 and I can get to the command line ok. First off I need internet access and can't figure out how to connect it to my access point. I realize this is Ubuntu 16.04 so it is systemd and that may be throwing me for a loop as the normal /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file doesn't exist. From what I have read online I could download network-manager, but I don't have internet access yet to download anything.

Is there a way to connect the current i3 image to WiFi? If so, how?

Information Cloud Storage For Pinebook running Linux
Posted by: sickofthesea - 06-27-2017, 08:05 AM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook - Replies (1)

There has been another post on cloud storage here: https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=4546

But this didn't work out for me so I went looking for an alternative and found rclone: https://rclone.org/

It's command line only and describes itself as rsync for cloud storage. There is an arm64 linux binary for download which worked perfectly on my pinebook running ubuntu mate. So far I've only tried using it with Dropbox and it seems to work fine. The sync command only works one way modifying the destination only so you need to be careful with it. I'll sync from the cloud to pinebook before I start working and then sync from pinebook to cloud once I've finished.

Installation & configuration is quite straightforward with plenty of instructions on the web site.

It syncs with the following services apparently:

  • Google Drive
  • Amazon S3
  • Openstack Swift / Rackspace cloud files / Memset Memstore
  • Dropbox
  • Google Cloud Storage
  • Amazon Drive
  • Microsoft OneDrive
  • Hubic
  • Backblaze B2
  • Yandex Disk
  • SFTP
  • The local filesystem
With the following features:
  • MD5/SHA1 hashes checked at all times for file integrity
  • Timestamps preserved on files
  • Partial syncs supported on a whole file basis
  • Copy mode to just copy new/changed files
  • Sync (one way) mode to make a directory identical
  • Check mode to check for file hash equality
  • Can sync to and from network, eg two different cloud accounts
  • Optional encryption (Crypt)
  • Optional FUSE mount (rclone mount)
Hopefully this will help some people. I found that I had started taking cloud storage, synced between all my devices, for granted and rclone has made my pinebook much more usable as a daily device.

Enjoy.

Martin

I've also found rclone-browser here: https://github.com/mmozeiko/RcloneBrowser

I've built it from source and I am playing around with it now. Seems pretty good as well.

Information Connecting to an iPhone Personal Hotspot works
Posted by: frank-zappa - 06-26-2017, 05:22 PM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook - Replies (1)

Hello all.
I took delivery of my Pinebook last week and was playing around with is as one does.
I decided to see if it would connect to the internet using the "Personal Hotspot" feature on my iPhone. I was not expecting it to work as I had no luck when i tried it using Linux Mint on another laptop.
I was pleasantly surprised  when it worked. This makes it a far more "usable" machine for me.
I should also point out that  the machine came installed with Ubuntu Mate.

I thought this was worth pointing out as others may not be aware that it works so well.

Ubuntu buil 0.5.5-65 Audio stopped output
Posted by: nicole.f - 06-26-2017, 02:55 PM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook - Replies (2)

Hi,
it is a pretty weird, but the audio output of my Pinebook 11.6" stopped working - but is still working in Android.

I have Android (from factory) on eMMC and Ubuntu with Mate desktop build 0.5.5-65 on microSD card. I used it to watch Youtube videos including audio using SMplayer. It worked nicely all night, using the speakers and using headphones.

Next day I resumed the device and every since I can not hear anything from the device, neither speaker not headphones. I checked the mixer and Pulse audio settings and can not find anything suspicious - though I have to admit that alsamixer exposes way too many mixers. Most of them I can not tell their function.

I also compared the default /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf with the one on the device in order to find any mixer misconfig, but they are identical.

Currently all audio playback seems to run fine, all players play as expected but there is no audible output.

If I reboot into Android again everything seems to be normal.

Any idea?

Thanks!

Cheers
  nicole
