Performance question - Rock64 vs A64+ vs RPi 3 - jl_678 - 07-08-2017 Hi, I am a happy user of of an A64+ that is serving as a Linux server in my basement, and it has worked flawlessly with Armbian and Debian before that. Anyway, Owncloud is a bit slow on the Pine and I am considering upgrading to a Rock64. Does anyone have a sense of how the performance of the 4GB board would compare to my 2GB A64? As an added question, any sense of how the Rock64 would compare to a RPi 3 performance wise focused on the Linux server use case? Thank you! With eMMC and USB 3.0 (and more RAM) likely considerably better for file-serving. My early pre-production unit doesn't have a functioning USB 3.0 but I am very much looking forward to trying out OMV (the img is already available) with a production R64 to compare against my Pine64 running OMV. Webserving would be the primary use case.(07-08-2017, 02:48 PM)jl_678 Wrote: Hi, Part of the reason I ask is that the article below suggests that the Rock64 uses the same cpu as the RPi 3 and thus that the performance will be similar. This seems odd to me. https://www.extremetech.com/computing/252053-pine64-debuts-new-raspberry-pi-competitor-4gb-ram-claims-4k-hdr10-support Thank you! But if your issue is that the CPU is at full load and struggling, you won't find much gain to the R64 since the CPU cores are practically the same (despite slightly higher clock speed). RE: Performance question - Rock64 vs A64+ vs RPi 3 - MarkHaysHarris777 - 07-08-2017 The Rock64 will blow the RPi3 out of the water; hands down , no contest; the bottle neck hub on the RPi is not present on the Rock64, the Rock64 has two PHY, one Gbe, usb3.0 and the processor is 'better' meaning faster and more responsive-- seriously , no contest. RE: Performance question - Rock64 vs A64+ vs RPi 3 - jl_678 - 07-09-2017 Will it blow an A64+ out of the water too? (A 4GB Rock64 acting as a Linux server that is.) (A 4GB Rock64 acting as a Linux server that is.) The A64+ and a Pi3 are more or less equal (except in terms of Ethernet, where A64 wins big time). So in terms of data throughput, yes it will. (A 4GB Rock64 acting as a Linux server that is.) In my opinion, yes. But, that depends how you setup your server. Because your SDD (or HDD) can be attached via usb3.0 , and because the Rock64 is about 10-15 % faster. Its a more efficient SoC. (no promises, and no quotes) RE: Performance question - Rock64 vs A64+ vs RPi 3 - jl_678 - 07-09-2017 Hi, Thank you everyone. Let me summarize what I read. Why Rock64 is faster than RPi3 Slightly faster cpu eMMC storage for faster access No ethernet/USB bottleneck USB 3.0 Up to 4GB of RAM vs 1GB for RPi Why Rock64 is faster than A64+ Slightly faster cpu USB 3.0 Up to 4GB RAM vs 2GB for A64+ eMMC storage for faster access Thank you, JL Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk RE: Performance question - Rock64 vs A64+ vs RPi 3 - fire219 - 07-09-2017 (07-09-2017, 07:41 PM)jl_678 Wrote: Hi, This is 100% correct. |
