create tow boot .img
#1
where would i find instructions on how to create a .img.xz  for a OS file to use with tow boot?

will tow boot use any img file?   i downloaded a .img file that wasn't on the pinephone pro wiki,  it was on the pinphone and it did not work when trying to run it from the sd card.

im a newb and maybe asking the incorrect questions...., so thanks for explaining what i may not be understanding.

specific question: how do i take one of the os's from this page : https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php?title=...Kali_Linux and use it on tow boot from SD card while holding down the down volume button during startup?

thanks

Lets step few steps backwards:
Tow-boot is bootloader (boots the phone and starts the OS of your choice)
First you have to install tow-boot to your PPP (my instructions where to do just that)

If you want OS (operating system) what works with PPP and tow-boot atleast these work
Mobian
PostmarketOS
Arch (danct)
manjaro

But use image what is made for PPP (Pinephone Pro) others will not work

I forgot to mention i have already installed tow boot. and everything works fine with the images you mention above,  i tried most all of them both from the internal storage and external sd card.  so that's all great....so how do i make my own image from a distro that's not within the PPP list?

If you want to build OS that is not yet supported it requires a considerable amount of really strong skills and understanding.

I am not familiar with Kali but there is "not working - not supported  and 100% unofficial" image to PPP.
https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PinePhone_P...DPA_Images

If you are very skilled with Linux and understand how a phone differs from a computer, then it might make sense to start building a new operating system for Pinephone Pro. But it is also worth noting that there is no guarantee that you will get support or that others will get excited about the development, so you can be completely alone with the development work.

It's also worth thinking about what you would actually like to achieve by installing an operating system of your choice? And would it be possible to achieve this also with current alternatives that already work in some way and have some kind of community support network?

At the moment there are many good OS choices to Pinephone Pro, in which a huge amount of time, sweat and work have been invested to make the basics work somehow. I suggest you pick one of them and go from there.
