My Debian journey on the Pinebook Pro
Posted by: schwarzwieweiss - 12-16-2020, 09:59 AM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (32)

I've been using Debian on my Pinebook Pro for quite a while now, going through some iterations:

  1. A few days after receiving my Pinebook Pro in early 2020, I installed Debian on a microSD card using the script from https://github.com/daniel-thompson/pineb...installer/, disabled eMMC, and used only the microSD card
  2. A few weeks later I installed an NVMe SSD in my Pinebook Pro and copied over the installation from the microSD card, but kept u-boot and /boot on the microSD card
  3. Again some time later I finally flashed u-boot to the SPI flash and could boot directly from the NVMe SSD, so I got rid of the microSD card. Time for a fresh installation I thought and tried the very latest (daily) SD card image for the Debian Installer, leading to
  4. installing Debian using the serial console as the Pinebook Pro's display did not turn on when booting the Debian Installer. However, I could install Debian on the NVMe SSD (/boot plus encrypted /), remove the microSD card with the installer and boot the fresh installation. Serial console only, so I grabbed https://github.com/xmixahlx/pbp-tools and compiled kernel 5.7, booted it and finally the display turned on.
The installation from 4. has been in use for several months now. Whenever there is a new kernel package coming in from Debian, I try to boot that, which always work and always gives serial console output only. So I always return to kernel 5.7 built with the script from xmixahlx. I also tried kernel 5.8 when xmixahlx updated the script but that kernel fails to decrypt my encrypted /. As my main hope is that Debian will "simply work" at some point in the future, I never investigated this issue properly and just stayed with kernel 5.7.

Given this month's blog post, I thought I'd give the most recent (Alpha 3) Debian Installer for Bullseye another shot. Still no output on the display, serial console only, so I didn't bother going through the actual installation but decided to stick with the one I have.

While above might sound somewhat negative, I am quite happy with the Pinebook Pro and Debian on it. It's working great and I can live with sticking to an older kernel for a while. Everything else "just works" (well, everything is obviously only what I use/tested, e.g. I don't put my devices in sleep mode, I turn them off, so I never tested sleep/hibernation/...). And it's fantastic that you can install from the official repositories using the official installer.

However, if someone managed to have the Debian Installer/kernel turn on the display and output to it, I'd be happy to hear it and give it another try. This is essentially the only thing missing for me at the moment.

(I did test other distributions over the months, installing them to a microSD card, booting and testing the distribution without touching the Debian installation. Some worked really well, but none of them made me reconsider my choice to use Debian (which I use on my other devices as well).)

No cellular connection after update on Manjaro ARM (kde)
Posted by: Valaki - 12-16-2020, 08:23 AM - Forum: Manjaro on PinePhone - Replies (5)

I've been really liking the pinephone, but I installed manjaro kde edition on a 64GB sd card, and everything worked fine. Then I updated a lot of packages and now I can't make phone calls, write text messages and use mobile data.

I'm surprised as it works well on the other two editions of manjaro even after an update, but I don't really like the interfaces and those environments seem to be really slow compared to the kde edition.

My kernel is 5.10.1-1-MANJARO-ARM
The verison of ofono is 1.31-4

Also ofonoctl throws a python error, even with sudo
Any help would be really appreciated!

Novice question: Pinebook Pro does boot (does it?) but black screen
Posted by: Gert V. - 12-16-2020, 04:43 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (21)

Hello all,

I´m new to the forum and already asking for help. I ordered my Pinebook Pro in the spring this year and I got it delivered a few weeks later.
Although I haven´t used it at all recently I did check if it worked by the time it arrived and it did. It did boot as well from the internal memory as an sd-card, and I played a bit with it, set up wifi-connection for instance, nothing big.

Because of unrelated issues I didn´t get to use the PBP after that. This week I dug it up, charged it and pushed the on-button. And then nothing, or at least not much. The orange led lights up, changes to green after a couple of seconds and that is it. The screen stays off.
Although theCaps Lock and NumLock leds do function if the (combination of) keys are pressed, but that´s really all it does.

As a relative novice to Linux and especially open hardware like this I realize I´m probably in way over my head, but nevertheless I´m determined  to give it a try. I opened the backcover already but as far as I can tell nothing strange to see there.
The emmc-switch is toggled correctly, which is logical as it did boot at first. Pressing the reset-button didn´t make a difference.

So I´m at a loss here. Anyone here to help me to troubleshoot this? Where to start, what to check next, is it hardware- or software-related, etc, etc.

Help will be very much appriciated.

Cheers, Gert

Posted by: ron_burgundy - 12-15-2020, 08:41 PM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook - Replies (5)

So I just got a pinebook. Not even sure which model it's the first version (non pro) 11.6" 1080 screen. Is this known as the pinebook or pinebook 1080?

Anyway. It has android installed to the emmc. I followed some forum advice and got the pine 64 installer tool to try to flash a distro to SD then to Emmc.  The installer tool kept giving me errors.

So I downloaded kde neon from the pine 64 neon and selected the image in the installer tool. Flashed to SD card fine booted up. I was looking for on screen instructions to pop up, but only thing I saw was a shortcut titled "run this first time".  It basically set language, timezones, etc.

And I popped out the SD card and still booting android from emmc.  I never saw any on screen instructions can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Is there another way to flash this os from my SD card to the emmc? I've searched quite a bit and keep seeing that the installer tool is the go to, but for some reason it's not working out

Thanks for any help you can give me

Sorry for being a new haha

  Java Installations and Compatibility
Posted by: General_Jacob - 12-15-2020, 04:05 PM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (2)

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here so if I am posting in the wrong location or format please let me know. I hope to start to become active in these forums as I learn more about the Pinebook Pro.

I have been testing various relatively simple programs on the PBP to get myself acquainted with it. I decided to see how old school Runescape works/runs and if I would encounter any problems. Of all the things I have done with the PBP since it arrived a week or so ago this has by far given me the most difficulty, and unless I missed something in the requirements to play I believe it boils down to a java problem. I have downloaded various forms of java, java web apps to attempt to get it to run in the browser, and tried switching between default versions to get it to run. The launchers crash or never show a GUI, and the browser remains blank.

Has anyone encountered similar difficulties with other java based programs? I recognize the answer here may be relatively obvious but as an enthusiastic beginner I cant help but feel there is something I am missing.

I really appreciate any help, insight, or pointers in advance, thanks!

  Modem firmware update

Towards the end of the Pine64 update video PLN talks about a modem firmware update that improves call reliability and power consumption, do I need to do something particular to receive this update or will I get it through apt?

No longer for sale.

I've decided to keep it as the keyboard will open up further possibilities.
