Yeah, it ain't the prettiest device around, and isn't that cheap either... $299 (pi-top and rPi) plus $70 shipping (to Australia in my case)... er, I want a pinebook!
The thing to consider here though is the pi-top is a modular system around a standard Raspberry Pi, and has a built in experimenters / prototyping area, whereas the pinebook is based around a custom PCB, not the Pine64 board... You can't just get yourself a pinebook minus the main board, and just shove in a pine64 board... but you can get a pi-top and shove in a standard raspberry pi... so it's a bit of an oranges to apples comparison. Having said that... I wouldn't hesitate recommending the pinebook for it's price and capabilities for use as a prototyping/development setup in its own right, or hackable notebook form-factor android tablet
