Pinebook Pro vs. Starlabs Star Lite Mk2
#1
Has anyone else seen the Starlabs Star Lite mk2?

Although it retails at $419, just over double the Pinebook Pro, I think it would still be considered a fairly affordable laptop. It seems aimed less at tinkerers, and more at people who want a fairly nice Linux ultraportable that's ready to go out of the box. It seems to have some fairly nice features for the price, including:

  • Built for Linux
  • Intel Management Engine disabled
  • Firmware updates through LVFS
  • Full metal case
  • 11.6" 1920x1080 IPS semi-matte screen
  • 8 GB RAM, 240 GB SSD
  • Intel Pentium N4200 quad core
  • Dimensions: 0.53" x 11.1" x 7.5", 2.54 pounds (the Pinebook Pro is a little wider but thinner, and a few ounces heavier)

I think either one would look professional in a work meeting. Anyone care to hazard the relative power of the N4200 vs the RK3399?

The RK3399 and N4200 will be about the same in terms of CPU performance. Single core performance (big cores) may even be better on the RK3399 (at the 2.0ghz clock as ran on BSP OS images) in some applications. I'd guess N4200 will win out slightly in multi-core performance, but I'd be surprised if by more than 10-15%. I can't speak to the GPU.

Other than the specs I think the 14" versus 11.6" screens will be result in a big difference in feel. 11.6" can be a big fiddly to hack on for long periods.
PineTime: wasp-os and MicroPython, Pinebook Pro:  Debian Bullseye

He he, yes. And yet, I've always had a fascination with small laptops. It's irrational, I know - they hardly ever leave the house ;-) I had a Fujitsu Lifebook B-something-or-other with a 10.1" screen , and a few 11.6" netbooks. Eventually conceded they weren't very practical and now have a 13.3". I'll probably aim for 14" or 15.6" next time.
