Pinebook Pro ANSI keyboard - feedback please!
#31
Interesting, yet not as "compatible" than "cfilorux" Smile

What's the motivation backing the grey keys ?

It would be awesome if you could buy a replacement ISO or ANSI keyboard (to switch from ISO to ANSI), especially a backlit one!

Switching only the keyboard is not possible, because the keyboard bezels of the ISO layout cannot accommodate an ANSI keyboard. A bezel that can accommodate either ANSI or ISO is possible and common, see post #12, but Pine64 decided against it. So you have to buy an entire topcase with the keyboard.

About backlit keyboard, that has been ruled out already. Still it would have been nice at least as aftermarket accessory, but as it stands this is not planned (unsure if even possible with current motherboard?)

These are the two of the three most important points I would like to see addressed in an upcoming hardware revision of the PBP, the third one would be a 40-pin eDP connector which allows aftermarket upgrade to QHD screens (RK3399 limited bandwidth per eDP lane allows only FHD on 30-pin eDP).

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Luke, Can you please explain why Pinebook Pro ANSI layout shown in the Store is not the one you have communicated. Delete key between Backspace and Enter and Pipe/Backslash key next to the right Alt, this is not really ANSI but some weird variation.  Huh

Can you please explain this change? To be honest, this is major showstopper preventing even considering buying Pinebook Pro.

I assume we can fix the non-ANSI-ness with xmodmap.

@Luke Do pictures for both keyboard layouts on the pine64 store need updating? The ANSI one doesn't sound like described, and doesn't have the pinecone superkey. The ISO one does have the pinecone icon, but the bezel looks different at the front (notches it around trackpad) if that makes any difference.

Anyway, assuming that photo *is* old, I'll probably be ordering an ANSI layout Pinebook next year just in time for the february closures Wink

Darn, i guess its remapping and keycap labels for me.

Is it possible to remap:
F11 → Insert
F12 → Delete
And with all modifications — Shift+Insert, Control+insert works too?

And to get F11 and F12 with Fn ? For all software, no exceptions?

You can export your keymap with "xkbcomp -xkb $DISPLAY output-file", make the necessary changes and use xkbcomp again to load the edited keymap. That won't let you map F11 and F12 with the Fn key but you could make use of Alt Gr, Ctrl+Alt or whatever else you see fit. There's probably some elegant way to then make that your default keymap but I've never looked into doing that.

I won't guarantee that will work in every application without exception but I don't immediately see why it wouldn't. Save for virtual consoles and quite probably Wayland, of course.

You can change the mapping and the caps but some keys are bigger than others.  This is typical of what's sold in the US.  $15 list BTW, I've got several of them.

So are Pinebook Pros with ANSI keyboards shipping yet?  I ordered mine November 8.
