RockPro64 Case 2x3.5" HDDs and 2x2.5 HDDs
#21
I addition to my previous photo post, here's the end result |-) I used two other sata down angled cables, otherwise cabling came to close to the fan to my taste.. And I used a three pin to two pin cable (had to mod the 2pin connector because it was bigger and wider than the socket on the board : ) to be able to connect to 4 pin connector of the Be Quiet fan |-)

The ROCKPro64 case looks great and glad to see it is now available in the store. I think it will suit my needs quite nicely as a Docker host for backups and other projects!

One thing I think would be really useful for more hardware inexperienced people like myself is if there was a "shopping list" somewhere, here or in the store, so I would know exactly what I need to buy to get it all going. Either a list of links to each item needed (or if you have input into the shop have a "starter-kit" listed).

I think the shopping list could assume that the user has the HDs as Pine64 does not sell those but links to everything else that you need to buy to get this going by scratch would be super useful so I don't buy the wrong things or miss buying things that are important.

Cheers!  Smile

Anyone else who has bought and build this have a list of parts they bought? Would just want to make sure I bought parts that fit and enough kit for cooling as well.

Here is what I'd check out not including HDD suggestions:

Either

or

Everything else you need:

https://www.pine64.org/?product=rockpro6...nas-casing
https://www.pine64.org/?product=rockpro6...rface-card

Optionally eMMC:

https://www.pine64.org/?product=usb-adap...mmc-module

80mm fan:
There currently isn't a 80mm fan in the store (there will be in the future).

If you can't find a compatible one where you live, then get any 80mm 12v 2 pin one and find Jst 2.0 Ph 2-Pin connectors. They can be obtained on the cheap where I live. Clip the existing wires and solder / or exchange the plug.

There are obviously other extras you may want to get for the future, such as the WiFi/BT module, etc. but I won't account for that as many will not find it something necessary.

Hi Luke, thanks very much for that. Good to confirm what needs to be bought to get that all up and running. I think if I can source a fan (or it comes up on the Pine64 store) I am going to have to buy it.

I currently run two Pine64s attached to two separate external drives but this solution seems a lot nicer for what I need and the Rockchip sounds like it is a lot more open (hardware acceleration on Linux) than the Allwinner chips.

Thanks again!

@Luke I am also interested in how to attach 4 internal drives? Would a SATA multiplier be an option or an internal USB interface.....? It would be sad if I have to mod the case to plug a cable to the external USB plug Undecided

To those of you asking about connecting 4 HDDs - you'll need to wait for someone with actual knowledge of how to do it to respond, as I do not want to offer up false info. I'll ask TL to answer in this thread.

I have to admit to some confusion about fans for the NAS enclosure. The 80 mm fan was recently added to the product pages and seems to have 2-pin connector. This might imply that the Rockpro64 board regulates fan speed by reducing voltage on the fan power connector. Can anybody confirm this? It also implies that only a single fan should be configured in the enclosure - no heat sink fan. Personally, I would prefer to have a pwm case fan with its own controller.

I am awaiting the arrival of my recently ordered NAS enclosure. I had ordered a midsize heat sink with a 20mm fan on top - thinking that case fan was a second fan in the enclosure, and was included with the case. Obviously, I was wrong. It would be very helpful, if the NAS enclosure product page was updated to show the parts list for a complete project.

I've written up a pretty detailed wiki entry for the NAS Case. Anyone willing to contribute, edit or correct please do so: http://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/NASCase

Just received my case today. The SATA cables supplied with the case are not a very good fit - they don't look like the ones in your case photos above.
There is very little space between the top of the case and the dual SATA interface card. I received SATA cables with connectors that don't fit in the given space. Angled connectors are available. I see they are available at Walmart.com. This picture shows angled connector available at Walmart:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oy2nv39...sp=sharing

This next picture shows straight connectors. The black cable was received with the Rockpro64 case and has the largest connector. The red cable is an old cable I rescued from an old PC. It has a smaller connector similar to the ones shown in your photos: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vMihAnr...sp=sharing

As an aside, instead of the two cables normally accompanying the case, they packaged three SATA cables. But one of the included cables had a broken connector.
