I am not in front of my computer, but it seems to be a problem with the x-toolkit.
Usually I use xaw3d, when compiling emacs by myself. I don’t have kde installed, but you
could check the output of ldd emacs to see what toolkit is linked. gtk themes sometimes have
icon problems. Maybe its related to your problem
Hi,
I am not messaging from my new pinebook pro right now. I just wanted to give you more details about the problem:
After deciding to use the default Manjaro KDE in the flash drive; I installed emacs from the pacman. Trying to launch the program didn't work for me; after a bit of googling I figured out emacs doesn't like inconsistencies in theme settings between the kde look and feel and that of gtk/gnome. I set the gtk settings to breeze and I am able to start emacs now.
However, the toolbar of emacs is lacking any icons: neither breeze nor adwaita icons. Fortunately, all the toolbar icons are still there with text only. So, it is still usable. I am not sure at this stage if this is intentionally tweaked by Manjaro/Pine developers. In any case I am not happy with this because I tend to use emacs toolbar at the side of the emacs buffer to gain screen estate. Text only icons occupy too much space esp. on the side.
I will try your suggestions and update if it fixes anything. If it doesn't fix, I will compile emacs from sources to see if it fixes anything. Emacs is a very important program for me and I want it to be working as bug free as possible. I may consider switching to Xfce or maybe debian (though mate desktop is not my favorite environment) if I feel further problems with Manjaro kde.
Thank you for the suggestions. I will keep you updated.
PS. Apologies for the screenshot mess; I couldn't see any attachments buttons on the forum post screen so I decided to copy and paste the image... It has been a while since I didn't hit a forum and given the amount of issues I need to solve with my pinebook, I may likely need to set up the forum in my email client perhaps. Ah ok, I just saw the "Add Attachments" button now. I will repost the screen shot if I can.
