ffmpeg can also do it, see x11grab in the man page.  Not exactly a GUI user-friendly program but I've done it a couple times.  You can grab just part of the screen I think.  But computer screens with mostly low numbers of colors and sharp contrasts don't work well with mpeg which is a little like jpeg that way.
