Pro NVMe adapter Does not fit ! ?

  Before attempting to do this modification, you should study the situation carefully.
There are many helpful posts in this thread and in other threads on this forum.

Many have encountered extreme problems with this modification.
Three main problems,
1) the physical fit of the SSD into the allotted space
2) the software inter-action with the SSD
3) the power requirements needed to run the SSD

and various smaller problems.

many have succeeded with this addition to their Pinebook Pro,
so it IS possible. but Please proceed with caution.

    Hello,  Luke,  TLLIM,   or  ??

          We seem to have a clearance problem with the M.2 NVMe  adapter  and card not quite fitting into the allotted space.
 
  ! !    It is hitting the underside of the touch pad.
      *         Causes the touch pad to lift out of place when the cover is closed
      *          And the touch pad to not respond properly.

      >  I have replied to the persons that experienced the problem over at the first impressions thread.
      >   I made a few suggestions to them on possible fixes,

      *      but   it may be better with some official intervention ?

       After thinking about it,  I figured this should have its own thread  ? 
       Though if those sound like acceptable solutions, 
          maybe you (Admin) could move my previous posts those over here  ?


          Is there a "Factory Approved"  solution  ?

        I have already received my adapter,  waiting on my own PBP.

 Luke has informed me they have resolved this issue.
 DO NOT INSTALL until you receive the 'kit'
**  They will be mailing to everyone who has previously ordered the PCIe/NVMe adapter.

I think the whole Pinebook Pro case would need to be redesigned to make some people happy.
But a few forum members have found ways to make the parts all "Fit together"  and work.
See the POST by @danielt a very nice job with his installation, Great pictures and very good description of his work.
Also a good install job with pictures by @Wizzard.
  You may need to dig back a way into the old forum posts,  but there is a lot of Great stuff in those older posts..!

A small NVMe SSD, M.2 2242 (42mm) will do the trick?

I need to look a bit more, but I think the M.2 2242's I saw were PCIe x2
The requirement is a PCIe x4

BUT I will check again.

I have a Toshiba RC100.
It indeed does not meet the requirement:
PCI Express;
Compatibel with PCI Express® Basisspes Revision 3.1a and NVM Express™ Revision 1.2.1-set.

I am a little more concerned with getting M.2 NVMe module to actually 'boot' but perhaps Mrfixit can put that into one of his future
updates, for the operating system updates...

I could likely be satisfied with the size of the 64gb EMMc drive,
but I was hoping to squeeze a little more pep out of my soon to be PBP...

BUT changing the boot order on an arm device is un-charted territory for me, probably possible, but time consuming. (for me)

My stronger suit : will be to make the adapter and module fit without touching the touch pad.
"When" mine gets here.

You mean it doesn't work or that you can't reach optimal transfer speeds?

Normally PCIe devices are ok to negotiate over which lanes to use.

Don't know yet; hope the PBP is coming end of October.
My Toshiba RC100 is very small though, it will not reach the touch pad. I saw the pictures of the PBP internals.
I already received the adapter and will give it a try.

You can generally use fewer lanes, so 2x or 1x are fine. You will see reduced transfer speeds as a result but even a single lane running at pcie 1.0 speeds would give you 250MB/s and likely outperform the eMMC.
