No;

That said, you can boot a kernel off eMMC or SD card, which then mounts the root FS, (and any other FS selected by that OS), from NMVe. There are misc. instructions on how others made it work here in the forums. It's nothing an experienced Linux person would have trouble with. But, it's not ready for prime time for the average Linux user.

It's likely that in a year we would be able to boot off SPI, (a small flash drive builtin to the Pinebook Pro). Then it could boot the NVMe. That's no where near certain, nor complete.

it's not like uboot transferred from eMMC/SD to SPI magically starts to understand PCIe/NVMHCI, support for the latter should be written, no matter where the code resides. So this is the answer to the poster - you would be able to do so, if the firmware used, did support that interface. it's doesn't yet. so try using that rootfs on NVMe SSD approach, suggested above.
ANT - my hobby OS for x86 and ARM.

Someone did modify u-boot to allow booting from NVMe, and I believe a few people tested flashing it to SPI with success. The thread's probably buried, but it should be linked in the wiki.

Do you mean this thread:

I added a link from the Wiki over a month ago.

If it's some other thread, please let me know.

That's it.

There are also power issues:

Some NVMe drives Can have their maximum power dialed down,
but
Then they may no longer have such a speed advantage.

Disappointing for sure,  I now have the parts to convert two PBP's,

But I think I will stay with the eMMC,  Unless someone can Prove it is a worthwhile change.
