  Pinephone, not delivered yet ?? -- UK
Posted by: Lin12 - 02-29-2020, 09:12 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (15)

Hi Guys,

Is there anyone else in the UK who has not yet received their Pinephone ?

The delivery tracking is literally not moving at all. Just wondering if there are anyone else in same position as me.

  Booting with modified kernel parameters?
Posted by: zackw - 02-29-2020, 08:33 AM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (1)

Is there a way to do a one-off boot with changes to the kernel's "command line", ideally without opening up the PBP or attaching a serial console?  Like one would do on an x86 with GRUB by editing the menu entry.

I specifically want to interrupt the boot sequence while it's still running out of the initramfs and / isn't mounted, so that I can resize the partition, but I haven't been able to find anything on here talking about the general case.

I'm using the stock Debian install on the eMMC and I don't have a micro-SD card to put another OS instance on, unfortunately.

  pmbootstrap on Mac OSX
Posted by: srfne - 02-29-2020, 07:37 AM - Forum: PostmarketOS on PinePhone - Replies (2)

I do not own pinebook pro (linux computer) yet so I tried to install phosh w/ a Macbook terminal

from top to buttom:

$ curl -O https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py
$ sudo python3 get-pip.py
$ pip3 --version
$ pip3 install pmbootstrap

$ pmbootstrap init

$ pmbootstrap install --sdcard=/dev/mmcblk0
$ pmbootstrap install --sdcard=/dev/sda

last two commands both generate:

[06:25:26] *** (1/5) PREPARE NATIVE CHROOT ***
[05:29:26] ERROR: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/proc/mounts'
[05:29:26] See also: <https://postmarketos.org/troubleshooting>
Run 'pmbootstrap log' for details.

Anyone knows what i'm doing wrong?

  Gnome image 2020-02-28
Posted by: Zweitaktmotor - 02-28-2020, 06:46 PM - Forum: PostmarketOS on PinePhone - Replies (7)

Hi,

First of all, many thanks to whoever tried to put this image together. I am working on it as well.

However, it does not seem to let me log in (neither as the existing Linux User nor as "Not listed" using "demo").

I also notice that this installation does not seem to use the Mali400 driver, with the result that the screen elements are too big.

I have been trying to work on this as well, but am still struggling to get PMOS to start in Gnome natively.

These are the steps to replicate what I did:

1. Install 2020-02-18 phosh but DO NOT update/upgrade. Make sure your Wifi works.

2. Now install Gnome with

Code:
sudo apk add gnome
sudo apk add gnome-apps

Here I am encountering the first problem: Installing gnome-apps gives me an error message that it "breaks mesa-dev-19.3.4-r1" but never mind, it does not seem too serious.

Next, install a new user in Phosh, under Settings / Details / Users. I used just "tester" / "tester"

Then start Gnome with

Code:
sudo rc-service gdm start

When prompted, log in with "not listed" and use the credentials listed above.

What you get is a high resolution display which - admittedly - needs good eyesight, but everything fits nicely on your screen. Under Settings / Details / About, you should see "Graphics: Mali400" (which is not the case under Phosh)

Under Settings / Univeral Access, you can tweak some settings for better visibility (try Large Text to start with).

You can install common programmes quite nicely. Try LibreOffice, Thunderbird and GParted for instance.

***

But I have not been able to start this natively. If I try anything else, I get the low resolution display apparently used in the image that has become available today.

***

Can I also make a general suggestion please: Sometimes, when I do update/upgrade, the boot partition runs out of space. Perhaps it should be increased to something like 200 MB?

And since the phone's internal memory is 16 GB, perhaps the images should take this into account instead of limiting to 2 GB? SD cards are very cheap nowadays, 16 GB is not going to break the bank.

  dd problem

I was able to receive call and after building a small apache website on it i thought it was time to try to boot from the emmc. By the way I was able to do this with all the information the community shares. So credits to all of you!

Anyhow I did something terribly wrong with the learning about dd

anyone that knows how to fix this? Preferably when I'm sshed in the phone.

Thank you Smile

Hello fellow Pine'ers

I realize development is fast paced with UBPorts Ubuntu Touch.
Pretty sure our enthusiastic community would prefer [rolling release] updates model.

Something like Arch Linux does. I know for sure I would like that.

  Can I run Ubuntu 18.04?

Is it possible to run Ubuntu 18.04 arm desktop version?
I require software that is only available on Ubuntu 18.04. I know Ubuntu 16.04 desktop works on pine64 but it is too old.

  KISS Linux for Pinebook Pro
Posted by: jedavies-dev - 02-28-2020, 11:54 AM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (4)

I've built a version of KISS Linux for aarch64, available here:  https://github.com/jedavies-dev/kiss-aarch64

For information on KISS Linux please see the main distro page:  https://k1ss.org

KISS Linux is x86_64 only.  However I wanted to run this on the Pinebook Pro, so have built an aarch64 version.  I'm posting this here in case anyone else is interested and to get feedback. Have been using this on my PBP for about a month so far.

Please note that this is a work in progress. For now I only provide a root tarball (same as x86_64) so you must install this from another distro using a chroot.  For example you can install KISS onto an SD card by booting into the default Debian running on the eMMC drive.  I may also provide a bootable .img file in future though.

Please note that this is an unofficial port of KISS Linux and is not supported by Dylan Araps (the creator of KISS Linux).  However I also sometimes hang around in #kisslinux on Freenode if you have questions.

Thanks,
James

Anyone have any luck with a browser that will launch the virtual keyboard?  I installed Firefox-ESR, works fine except the keyboard doesn't launch...

FYI, the keyboard launches in Gpodder, VLC...
