  Screen Resolution
Posted by: Zweitaktmotor - 03-08-2020, 03:38 PM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (2)

I think one of the main problems with all the distributions I have seen so far is screen resolution. Many dialogue boxes and other screens are just too big to be displayed and operated properly.

If we want to run standard Linux applications, then it seems imperative that we first try to do so in a standard screen size, rather than trying to adapt each singe application to a smaller space such as a phone display.

The Pinephone is very well capable of displaying a higher resolution than what we have seen so far. Look at the boot up messages in Maemo Leste or Debian Phosh. The displayed messages are tiny but still shown very clearly.

As a sort of "proof of concept", I was able to install Gnome over Postmarket OS Phosh (Gnome needs to be started in Terminal here) and ended up with an almost computer-like screen layout and ample space for the keyboard at the bottom in portrait mode. Surpirisingly, this was rather responsive and accurate to touch-operate. Please see my thread here:

https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=9309

There also seemed to be a way to move a cursor over an area to be tapped and then tap the screen anywhere to emulate a mouse click. It would perhaps even be possible to have a loupe-style magnification, if necessary.

To me, the reason seems to be that my installation somehow used the Mali400 graphics driver that is specific to the Pinephone's graphic chip. It was explained to me that Mali400 is non-free and therefore should not be used and in any case the physical screen resolution should have nothing to do with Gnome scaling.

But on the other hand, I have not seen any other high resolution distro yet.

How can we get something like this, please:

(Screenshot resolution reduced, due to upload limitations. In the original, you can read everything very clearly.)

  New Rockchip RK3588 In PBP Q1 2020

Hello everyone,

I was wondering when this new chip will be available which claims some performance improvements but 40% less power (RK3588)

  • And I would love to see 8G RAM option
@Luke do you have any general informatioN about possible stability?

Thank you

  Alternative to the screws?
Posted by: MIchael - 03-08-2020, 12:05 PM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (10)

So like I've been trying so do different stuff and have taken the screw out so many times, I'm worried it's gonna strip out.

I was watching an ETA and he reviewed a couple sbc cases that used magnets to hold the lid on. Has anyone tried that or something like that?

I'm about to order some and choice it a shot.

New PineBook Pro - websites display wrong
Posted by: vve1505 - 03-08-2020, 11:44 AM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (2)

On some sites - news sites in particular - the center frame is small and there is a lot of white space along both sides. Firefox and Chrome are not using the full page.

This is not a font size issue; nor is it related to any zoom functionality. It is that the browsers are displaying everything centered and not formatted to the full page.

Any ideas what will fix this. I'm sure it is a setting that I just cannot find.

  Pinetime backlight current.
Posted by: TT-392 - 03-08-2020, 11:12 AM - Forum: Development Discussion on PineTime - Replies (2)

The wiki of the pinetime mentiones the LCD driver part number, but nothing about the part number of the actual display. or backlight. It does mention the 3 backlight pins (low mid high), and according to the schematic these are just connected to a 2k2, a 100R and a 30R resistor, this suggests 3 different brightness levels, but you could get even more brightness levels if you were to combine these 3 brightness levels, but it doesn't really look like that was the intention of the original design. Now I am wondering. Can I pull all these 3 pins low without sending too much current to the backlight?

Photo ROCK64 v3 4GB DDR board memory chip number
Posted by: Johannes - 03-08-2020, 09:53 AM - Forum: General Discussion on ROCK64 - Replies (2)

Hi,

I recently received a ROCK64 v3 4GB DDR memory board.
The board has a 4GB sticker on it and came in a box stating it is 4GB.
However, after installing two linux distributions I found out that available memory is only 1GB.
(distros: bionic-lxde-rock64-0.9.14-1159-armhf.img.xz and Armbian_2-.02.1_Rock64_bionic_current_5.4.20_desktop.7z (both) on eMMC and microSD card.)

I found out that the DDR memory chip has number PB047 - 125 PT on it, this identifies online as a 1GB (8Gb) memory chip not 4GB (see pictures below).

My question is what 4GB chip numbers of other ROCK64 v3 4GB boards are there with confirmed 4GB of memory when the OS (linux) is running?
(just press <enter> after typing command 'free' or top in a terminal)

Regards,
Johannes

  Installing WPS Office on Manjaro
Posted by: brent.thierens - 03-08-2020, 09:47 AM - Forum: Pinebook Pro Tutorials - Replies (5)

As I personally do not like the Libreoffice suite, and I don't mind too much using software that is not FOSS if it's a better match for me, I managed to get WPS Office running on the PBP running Manjaro, and it works really smoothly! The PKGBUILD and accompanying files are attached. This is just a minor adaption from the x86_64 AUR PKGBUILD.

Enjoy!

  Terminal Preferences unresponsive
Posted by: Foxchild - 03-08-2020, 05:28 AM - Forum: UBPorts on PinePhone - Replies (2)

I would like to change the font size and overall terminal behaviour, but when I click on the little gear in the upper right corner, the preferences open, but are completely unresponsive. The phone doesn't freeze, I can still just go back to the terminal and all, but the preferences are completely frozen.

Is there another way to change the preferences and more importantly, how could I fix the preferences window?

  Not enough free space
Posted by: Foxchild - 03-08-2020, 04:27 AM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (8)

So, I have Ubuntu Touch set-up on the pinephone and I moved the OS to the internal memory with the command

Code:
sudo dd if=/dev/mmcblk0 of=/dev/mmcblk2 bs=4M

which worked fine.

Now I am trying to install some tools, but when I run the following command for instance

Code:
sudo apt install gparted

i get the error

Code:
E: You don't have enough free space in /var/cache/apt/archives/.

I managed to install jack, but when I try to run it, I get the same "out of memory" error.

What am I missing, in regards to memory? Do I have to "expand the filesystem" after installation or something?

  I GIVE UP
Posted by: SammiLeighTully - 03-07-2020, 04:06 PM - Forum: General - Replies (3)

I got the board when it first came out as a kickstarter. Never ONCE did I get it to work. Did I get help from the community? NOPE! Everyone who replied to my posts told me it was my power cord, the HDMI cord, or I didn't have a TRUE SD Card. Instead of helping me, you all drive me away to the point where I didn't bother with the board. I tried it and it still doesn't work. Did I get a lemon? I don't know. The people who made the board took my money and ran. After years of trying to get this board to work, I have TRULY given up and will be taking a hammer to it later. I might even record that. This was a complete waste of money and time that I will never get back. I won't be buying these boards ever again.
