  NVMe SSD Interface Adapter
Posted by: linuxfreund - 06-02-2020, 06:13 AM - Forum: Pinebook Pro Hardware and Accessories - Replies (1)

Hy there, today the Pinebook Pro arrived. Beautiful !!
I'm now in the process to install and configure the laptop (with Fedora 32) on the emmc. I've forgotten to order the NVMe SSD Interface Adapter.
How do get one? On Amazon it's not listed.  Do I have to order it at store.pine64.org ?

Thanks for Pinebook Pro

  PinePhone availability
Posted by: conic - 06-02-2020, 04:41 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (1)

Hi,

It's my first post so a hello and words of appreciation are in order. I've dreamt of a FOSS-friendly phone ever since I realized mobile phones are actually computers, back when we had Symbian S60 and the like, and the PinePhone (along with the Librem 5) seem the first devices promising to fulfill that dream.

To the point, PinePhone is listed as out of stock in the store, are they going to become available again anytime soon?

Cheers

  Intermittent Boot Issues
Posted by: MrRoosevelt - 06-02-2020, 12:46 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (19)

Greetings

My girlfriend and I both got our PBPs in last week. Out of the box I had issues with mine not booting properly.

I got the Manjaro setup process then on reboot, I got the orange to green led sequence but no back light on the screen. After a few power cycles I was able to boot into Manjaro. Every other power cycle the issue returns though. I can do a hard poweroff and power back up and it fixes the issue; though, it sometimes takes 3 or 4 power cycles to fix the issue. There seems to be no relation between power connectivity across boots as I have read in other posts on this forum. I have also tried switching ttys and trying to reboot through the serial console, as if the screen were just blanked, which was also fruitless.

I'm running the PBP as shipped from the factory; though I did allow Manjaro to do a system update once it finally booted.

My girlfriend's PBP, on the other hand, is behaving quite nicely.

I'm not sure where to start with debugging this. It looks like a hardware issue given that its not happening on both PBPs; but, I don't want to rule out the possibility that the Manjaro setup script botched something. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

[Solution]

The solution as mentioned by @khanku is that there are bugs in Manjaro's build of UBoot.

There is a uboot build in this git repo: https://github.com/mrfixit2001/updates_repo/tree/v2.0 The v2.0 branch targets PBP. There is a script in the directory pinebook/filesystem called mrfixit_update.sh. The script is smart enough to determine the target drive for writing the uboot image. I didn't want to install the kernel and other stuff, so I borrowed the script and made some redactions to fit my needs.

This may not be the best way to handle it; but, its what I did to get moving:

Code:
DIR="$( cd "$( dirname "${BASH_SOURCE[0]}" )" >/dev/null 2>&1 && pwd )"
SYSPART=$(findmnt -n -o SOURCE /)

if echo $SYSPART | grep -qE 'p[0-9]$' ; then
  DEVID=$(echo $SYSPART | sed -e s+'p[0-9]$'+''+)
else
  DEVID=$(echo $SYSPART | sed -e s+'[0-9]$'++)
fi

if [ -f $DIR/idbloader.img ] ; then
  dd if=$DIR/idbloader.img of=$DEVID bs=32k seek=1 conv=fsync
fi

if [ -f $DIR/uboot.img ] ; then
  dd if=$DIR/uboot.img of=$DEVID bs=64k seek=128 conv=fsync
fi

if [ -f $DIR/trust.img ] ; then
  dd if=$DIR/trust.img of=$DEVID bs=64k seek=192 conv=fsync
fi

I ran these commands one at a time; but, some return value checks on dd and better placement of file existence would help automation.

  Sway on PinePhone POC
Posted by: dejvino - 06-01-2020, 03:48 PM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (5)

Hi,

I got inspired by the cool sxmo project and decided to try something similar with my favorite tiling compositor: Sway. I've put together a proof of concept (POC) solution which consists of several config files and shell scripts. You can find it here: https://github.com/Dejvino/pinephone-sway-poc

There are various menus and shortcuts to help you avoid using the on-screen keyboard all the time. E.g. touching the backlight indicator spawns a custom dialog where you can change the settings. You can also use touch gestures to do some common tasks like move terminals around etc. Pressing the power button puts the phone into "sleep" mode to avoid draining the battery that much (replacing  the default shutdown action).

Be aware that this is just a bunch of configs that you can apply to your existing postmarketOS installation. Not a full image. Plus it likely has some gaps. But I think it could be helpful for someone anyway. It's surprising how much you can achieve with just the sway config file!

But that's not all! Even if you don't care about sway you might want to check out pinephone-toolkit which is a collection of UI-agnostic tools for controlling the LED, backlight, vibrations and putting the secondary CPUs into sleep. These should work with any distribution, so it is a nice building block.

  USB-C Dock with HDMI no output
Posted by: coolmule - 06-01-2020, 01:21 PM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (2)

Using a USB-C dock with a new pinebook. The other ports on the hub function. However there is no HDMI output.

When examining the "display configuration" GUI window (KDE) there is a second window called "DP-1" when the dock is plugged in, irregardless of whether a HDMI is plugged in or not.

When inserting the USB-C cable the other way around, the Display Configuration does not show any extra monitors irregardless of HDMI. It does not display the "DP-1" window in this case either.

HDMI on the USB-C dock works when connected to other devices

  I can NOT recommend the KDE plasma widgets
Posted by: Phillip Bell - 06-01-2020, 11:41 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (12)

I was interested in monitoring CPU usage, so I enabled the KDE CPU monitor widget.  It seemed OK, but then lag started occuring.  Then I opened it and turned on monitor all CPUs.

In short, never do this Smile Apparently, the default interval is set to 0 seconds, which can't be changed from desktop, and if it monitors all six CPUs, it overwhelms the buffer with monitor requests, which the processor is too slow to respond to.  Your user desktop will crash, and from GUI, you will be able to do nothing at all.

Later, I'll follow up how to resolve this of you get stuck - from the GUI, you can log into root and edit a file in the .config, to remove all those extra CPUs.  I don't have a good Internet connection right now, so I'll post when I do.

Until then, treat those widgets gently.  It seems at least one of them can't be tolerated by the hardware.

  A request to anyone with a Pinebook pro / other Pine device..
Posted by: account3122 - 06-01-2020, 10:43 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (14)

Hi All,

Apoligies if this isn't in the right place etc Smile

I was wondering if it would be possible for someone out there who owns one (or a differnt Pine product!) to compile this program from github and time it before I go ahead and purchase one. I have done this on all the computers that I have to have a general sense of how fast the CPU is etc - i know its not very accurate but it's interesting to be able to compare them IMO.

The program is called Minetest which can be found here: https://github.com/minetest/minetest#compiling ( I hope links are ok?)

For debian the commands are:

1)

Code:
sudo apt install g++ make libc6-dev libirrlicht-dev cmake libbz2-dev libpng-dev libjpeg-dev libxxf86vm-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libsqlite3-dev libogg-dev libvorbis-dev libopenal-dev libcurl4-gnutls-dev libfreetype6-dev zlib1g-dev libgmp-dev libjsoncpp-dev

2)
Code:
sudo apt install git

3)
Code:
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/minetest/minetest.git
cd minetest
4)

Code:
cmake . -DRUN_IN_PLACE=TRUE

And then, finally,

Code:
time make -j$(nproc)

If you could post your results for the time taken to build this I would be massivley thankful as it gives me something to compare it to in terms of devices that I have so that I can gauge the performance, rather than some generic numbers online Big Grin No need to run it or anything I would just like to know how long it takes to compile and if I can replace my ageing laptop with this system Smile

Thanks again,

G

  Hate Manjaro - Easy Ubuntu Install?
Posted by: PaulMcGuinness - 06-01-2020, 10:27 AM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (8)

Hi,

I'm pretty new to Linux, but I loath Manjaro.

How can I *easily* install Ubuntu as every route seems to lead me to a build script that complains about aarch64 comparability.

I just want to book from a USB image and wipe the eSSD with Ubuntu Arch64

Help please!!

Cheers,

Paul
