  No Shipping to Miami?
Posted by: leosk06 - 09-16-2020, 10:48 PM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (3)

Hello folks!

The store doesn't seem to ship orders to South America where I live, so I asked a friend in Miami to receive it for me, and alas, the store says it doesn't have shipment options for there too Huh

Is this the actual case, or is it just the store drowning under the heavy load of people frantically buying stuff?

Thanks!

  Shipment cost
Posted by: deedend - 09-16-2020, 10:02 PM - Forum: Shipment Related Discussion - Replies (2)

Hi all,

Although I understand the cost of shipment for main hardware pieces like the Pinebook Pro or the Pinephone, I really don't think is correct to have to pay 12 USD for a TPU case for the pinephone (that costs 9.99USD). Have you ever considered to offer a cheaper option (even if maybe slower) to ship those accessories? I have just bought a Pinephone, and unfortunately it's not possible to combine shipping, so I have to spend 27USD for the phone + 12USD for the case, a bit too much in the second case. I would accept even a non tracked option for these kind of items, if that put the price down considerably.

I'm from Australia

Is a Software update the same as instaling an updated image
Posted by: Word5 - 09-16-2020, 09:35 PM - Forum: PostmarketOS on PinePhone - Replies (1)

Hi,  I am sure that this is something odd to ask about but I am curious if updating the software in the updates is the same as installing a newer image.

I have been updating the software when it needs to but I did download and test the multiboot loader.  It had a newer image and it was different.

My current device is pmos that came with the phone that I have updated every time a update is in the store.  On the multiboot version the cheese app had a shortcut and the settings menu was different.

I am interested in why my software that is updated is different than a new image thatt was released.  Do I have to change a file that has the desktop shortcuts and a file to change how the settings menu gets displayed?
I also want to know if I am recieving the same type of updates the newer images are or if I will have to reflash the emmc to get the most recent updates.

Thanks

Adding tools to PineTab without filling root partition
Posted by: brentashley - 09-16-2020, 09:13 PM - Forum: PineTab Software - Replies (3)

I would like to get some tools on my PineTab - build-essential, git, midnight commander, pip3 install various things, jupyter etc.

One can remount the root partition as rw and then use apt to install things, and I've had success with that but it soon fills up the root partition which has less than 600MB free after a fresh install.  I'm not sure if there is a way I can target installations to go into the userdata partition.

Alternatively I could install things from source in my home directory, however of course I will need build-essential which will fill up my root partition.

What options do I have to make this work?

Ok; Pine64 platform is simple pimple, too - want a new OS or system, just burn an SD card and throw it in the slot...

You boot right into the OS or system thprivledat you wanted.

Why didn't ya'll just say that already - I don't need NOOBS, I just need to load and go.

Check. Tongue

I'm gonna be right @ home here... also, I *am* gonna learn uBoot and setup a build with several OSes for the... well; the NOOBS.

NOOBS probably need to know that you need to run NOOBS with privledges on MacOS or else the SD card won't burn.

At any rate, I love my PBP... its simple pimple, and I got Ubuntu Mate loaded... anyone have a favorite Ubuntu bases distro that has KDE - or really, anything other than suck bag Mate??? Tongue

I'm fixing to work a project now - with either FreeBSD or Ubtuntu running DosBox and getting all my old games rocking and rolling.
Furthermore, I'm gonna write a how-to on both Manjaro [because thats what is shipped....] and Ubuntu on how-to get on BBSes in 2020.....

If *you* dig old bulletin boards you should login to mine:

You need an ANSI terminal, like syncterm or netrunner.... syncterm is available at syncterm.bbsdev.net. After you install syncterm (Hopefully under SDL but I dont wanna confuse you right now, curses is OK...)

Check me out @

20ForBeers.com port 1337

and checkout the BBS scene of 2020... ANSI art is rocking hard. Door game networks are rocking hard. and FTN message networks are rocking hard - all available @ 20 For Beers BBS... and many others.

COME LOGIN, Pinebook community!!!

  read-only boot partition?
Posted by: tpchuckles - 09-16-2020, 07:29 PM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (2)

Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is really a linux / debian / whatever issue, or what, but it seems my /boot partition is read only. (let me know, or mods, feel free to move me).

I installed the original Debian version (not the "unofficial installer"), which installs Debian 9 or so, then upgraded that to Debian Sid (via the usual "update the releases file and apt-get update , apt-get update", and resolving some dependency issues). Then only recently, I realized that apt-get dist-upgrade doesn't actually upgrade the kernel like it does in ubuntu (been using xuubuntu for 12 years or so now, and not much else), so I went along with this to upgrade the kernel, but ran into an error where apt-get / dpkg said /boot was read-only. indeed, "cd /boot; sudo touch 'testing.txt'" shows it's read only, even to root, despite "sudo ls -l" from "/" telling me root ought to have read permissions. strange. This is linux installed on the eMMC module, which /boot and / (which includes home which i've been freely writing to for a while now) are partitions on.

it shouldn't be device dependent (both home (which I can write to) and boot (which I can't) are on the same device). it shouldn't be OS / mount dependent (nothing in fstab aside from swap, and "ls -l" says root is allowed to write to it). so what's up?

I did find this thread, but it appears to not really be resolved.

I'm also not exactly sure where else to look (what system logs, etc, and where?). (un)fortunately, xubuntu has served me extraordinarily well over the years and I spend more of my time doing daily computerly things than i do looking through logs files and troubleshooting things (so I may be a bit out of the loop, please bear with me).

EDIT: interesting. I was able to unmount /boot via gparted, then remount it (idk, an icon showed up on my desktop and i clicked on it), and then I was able to write to it, and "sudo apt-get install linux-image05.8...". I did see a few warnings appear, regarding drivers not found though. rebooting, I appear to still be in linux 4.4.207, per uname.

google tells me I'd want to update grub if i were on a more typical system which used grub, but otherwise i'm not sure how to get into the newer kernel which is supposedly installed. (also unsure if i even want to get into the newer kernel, given those driver errors it showed....)

How to build KDE neon images?
Posted by: imanolbarba - 09-16-2020, 05:32 PM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (1)

Hi all! I'm trying to find where is the source code to build KDE Neon images of plasma-mobile for the Pinephone.

We have a bunch of images here: https://images.plasma-mobile.org/pinephone/. I presume these are built daily from *somewhere*. I've tried reading the developer guide for plasma mobile, browsed a bunch on the KDE neon website and looked for repos and all I can find is the source code for plasma-mobile, but not the source code to build the KDE neon images for the pinephone specifically.

What I'm specifically looking for is the uboot script source, so I can edit it and compile it back with some changes. AFAICT it's different from the PostmarketOS image that comes with the phone.

Thanks!

  SD Card

While I'm familiar with Linux (I've been using it since 1993), I'm not familiar with Linux on the PinePhone. How do I know if the PinePhone can see my SD card?
