Ideas to use extra space in NAS case?
Posted by: _hg_ - 09-22-2020, 12:58 PM - Forum: RockPro64 Projects, Ideas and Tutorials - Replies (1)

I am only using the 2.5" drive slots so there is a lot of extra space in the case. The case is huge! Any ideas of how to put this space to use?

I could get a 4 port SATA card but I don't really need two additional drives.

You could 3D print a tray to put a second SBC in where the larger drives would go, run power out of one of those extra holes, and connect the two SBCs over serial link? With this, you could use PPP to connect the second SBC to the internet.

Anyone else doing something interesting with the extra space?

  Pine64 LCD
Posted by: rstcologne - 09-22-2020, 12:43 PM - Forum: General Discussion on PINE A64(+) - No Replies

Hi all,

is there any somewhat modern (still getting security fixes) linux distribution out there, that (still) supports the LCD screen?

I have tried numerous different images sometimes hoping that now outdated instructions on how to get it working still work but so far no luck.

Any hint highly appreciated, thanks!

Alternatively, can someone recommend another display which works well with Armbian?

Thanks,

Richard

Pinebook Pro Boot Issues - Booting needs multiple attempts
Posted by: mtndew - 09-22-2020, 11:13 AM - Forum: Pinebook Pro Hardware and Accessories - Replies (13)

I received my Pinebook Pro a week ago and three days ago I began having an issue when I turn on my machine, the orange light stays on and the OS will not boot. It normally takes between 3-5 tries on average before the computer will load the OS. The orange light will stay on for hours and nothing will happen, so it is not a matter of the machine booting slowly. I have ensured the eemc switch is flipped towards the hinge, the eemc module is properly seated, and all cabling is properly inserted. I have this issue booting from both eemc and SD card. I have also tried installing fresh OS installation s on both eemc and SD card. I have tried the plasma, xfce, and i3 versions of Manjaro, Debian, and Elementary OS, so I am ruling out there is an issue with software. I am currently using manjaro plasma as I type this from my PBP and that is what I initially started with on initial set up.

Other than this annoying issue with boot up, I am enjoying my PBP! Heart

  All the Manjaro Builds!
Posted by: Cree - 09-22-2020, 09:59 AM - Forum: Manjaro on PinePhone - Replies (12)

Woah okay grab something stable everyone, Manjaro is making big moves... 3 build released in the last week. Now there's an alpha with Lomiri (same UI as UT) and boy am i excited! Looks like they've ironed out more issues with phosh and hopefully theyre able to carry a lot of their progress over to the Lomiri and Plasma builds. Check out their news page for links to the latest!

Its also worth noting these are all official supported projects now, more than just a dev or 2 tinkering. Id say that make Manjaro a strong contender to take the lead soon. Just gotta start getting used to pacman over apt...

  Incorrectly asssembled keyboard
Posted by: ajtravis - 09-22-2020, 03:36 AM - Forum: Pinebook Pro Hardware and Accessories - Replies (1)

Hi,

My Pinebook Pro finally arrived after a delay caused by DHL not releasing the package until a week after I had paid the import duty. I was disappointed to discover that my new laptop was delivered without a UK adapter for the power supply and, more seriously, has an incorrectly assembled ISO keyboard: The 'H' key is missing and there are two ';' keys with all the keys in between shifted one place to the left.

In addition, there also seems to be a problem with the laptop display: Instead of the Manjaro logo, I get striped vertical lines in the middle of the display and the laptop hangs. Powering off/on seems to resolve the problem, but restarting the computer results in the display problem and the laptop hangs, requiring power off/on to resolve the problem.

I've been waiting five days for a response to my ticket on the Pine64 support site but despite two emails to Pine64 I've not received a response to my ticket #7100, so I decided to post a message here: I carefully prised off the key-tops from the incorrectly assembled keys, replaced them shifted one place to the right, and used the duplicate ';' key in place of the missing 'H' key. I've also flashed the Armbian Focal image to eMMC and the display appears to be working properly.

I was very optimistic about Pine64 and, despite being charged extra for delivery to the 'Highlands and Islands' of Scotland and the delays caused by DHL's incompetance, I am pleased to have my Pinebook Pro working with an NVMe SSD. However, I'm disappointed by the poor level of support I've received so far - I HOPE Pine64 are willing to send me an 'H' keytop to replace the duplicate ';' key at the very least in order to restore my confidence in the Pine64 support system!

Install Anbox on Manjaro plasma-mobile help
Posted by: paju1986 - 09-22-2020, 02:42 AM - Forum: Manjaro on PinePhone - Replies (11)

I tried to install anbox on the plasma mobile version of manjaro.
I did sudo pacman -S anbox anbox-image and then started the anbox container with
sudo systemctl start anbox-container-manager
but it keep crashing on startup.

Do anyone know what could be the problem?
In the phosh version it came already preinstalled and it work fine so something should be missing on the plasma-mobile version
maybe some env vars?

Regards!

Tongue I "need" another PBP.
Posted by: KC9UDX - 09-22-2020, 12:46 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (5)

I've gotten so used to running multiple operating systems on my PBP (via SD cards) that I've gotten to the point of "needing" to run two simultaneously.

Oh well, maybe I'll get to the point where I'm running one in a virtual machine.

Exclamation PSA: Poor audio quality / es8316 codec "stereo enhancement"
Posted by: haskal - 09-21-2020, 09:02 PM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (4)

TLDR: if your pinebook pro audio sounds crappy, try:

Code:
sudo amixer sset 'DAC Stereo Enhancement' 0

I've been using my PBP for a couple months now and i was noticing what seemed like an issue with the audio quality -- lots of music sounded really badly mis-equalized compared to playing the same music on other devices with the same headphones. So i dug into the codec and kernel driver and discovered this control, "DAC Stereo Enhancement" which is some sort of codec hardware "enhancement" for the audio going through it, which is on a scale of 0-7 and was set to 5 by default. IMHO it makes the audio sound like actual garbage and i would highly recommend disabling it. I had spent a lot of time trying to figure out why my audio was sounding weird (or if it was even sounding weird at all or i was just imagining things) and this "stereo enhancement" was it.

The control appears to be persistent across boots once you set it, so running the above command once should be all that's needed.
