Question Modem shield
Posted by: feklee - 12-10-2021, 03:10 PM - Forum: PinePhone Hardware - Replies (3)

My PinePhone has massive modem issues. It resets even when sitting on the table doing basically nothing, not even transmitting lots of data. On some days I have to restart it every ten minutes or so, on others it can be stable for hours. The crashes appear to be pretty random.

So this evening out of boredom and because I’ve nothing to lose, I opened the device. One of the FFCs sat a bit loose in the connector, the one right next to the SIM card slot. Maybe that was a reason, although I'm not sure whether that FFC goes to the modem. A quick look at the schematics didn't tell me anything.

Also, I pried the shield off the modem:

Here I have some questions:

  • These two fat blobs of thermal paste bridge a gap of almost a millimeter! Can that thermally even work?
  • Can I operate the modem without the shield?
  • How would that impact performance or thermals?

About the phone:
  • UBports Edition with VCONN fix (desoldering, no replacement)
  • ADSP 01.003
  • Biktorgj firmware 0.4.2 (should certainly try 0.4.5-2)
  • postmarketOS Edge / SXMO

PS: My PinePhone Pro has already arrived in Berlin, but it’s stuck in customs, and communicating with DHL Express is problematic due to the modem crashes. So I almost have a deadlock situation here.  Cry

Cannot even create profile because screen won't rotate2
Posted by: absolutenoob - 12-10-2021, 02:57 PM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (5)

Hi, I posted a previous thread but i couldn't see it, or find it.

I am having a problem even setting up my profile in the opening user configuration. The screen is stuck in landscape and won't rotate so I cant see what I am typing. I can go back to theprevious screen to remove the keyboard, but none of my info saves.

I have also plugged in a keyboard, but still nothing helps. Do I need to flash a new version of the OS or something?

Comparing the Librem 5 USA and PinePhone Beta

I wrote up some observations about the differences between the L5USA and PP:

Comparing the Librem 5 USA and PinePhone Beta

I would like to hear any feedback/critiques and know whether other people are seeing the same performance differences between the two phones.

I’ll probably post more observations later about the PP on my blog, now that I have it in my grubby little hands and can try using it as a phone. Sadly, I had to send the L5USA back to Purism for servicing and I don’t know when I’ll get back to the US to pick it up.

The "Should I buy a Quartz64 right now?" flow chart
Posted by: CounterPillow - 12-10-2021, 05:17 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Quartz64 - Replies (4)

Hello PINEfriends,

I made a small flow chart to help people decide whether they should buy a Quartz64 Model A right now. I'll try to keep it updated as progress continues. I hope some will find it useful!

Note: This mainly applies to the Model A.

PinePhone Pro Dev Edition - day 1
Posted by: brb78 - 12-09-2021, 11:55 PM - Forum: General Discussion of PinePhone Pro - Replies (9)

PinePhone Pro arrived today, and I was happily surprised to see it came with an included nano sim adapter and glass (?) screen protector. Having previously only owned a Braveheart I had expected to be on my own for any "add-ons". Otherwise still the just about the same packaging.

Played with the installed AOSP 9 until I realized it was without gps. Didn't check cellular, but that may also be isolated from the factory installed AOSP.

Nuked factory AOSP as directed in https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PinePhone_P...stallation
"The phone will freeze and then the screen will go blank", I expected the screen to actually blank, instead the apps disappeared and the status bar time froze but the screen remained on with wallpaper displayed. 10 minutes later rebooted into Arch. Greeted with what seemed like a much longer and stronger vibration than the PP.

15W charging is a major upgrade and the battery is 3000mAh which is an improvement over Braveheart's 2800mAh.

Everything runs super smooth and responsively. However, having tried Arch, pmOS, and Mobian, only Mobian was able to power on and connect the EG25. Seems like there may be a bad config in Arch, didn't dig into pmOS.

Sms and phone calls work on Verizon (although without audio), and with the added hardware improvements the PPP is well worth it. If the PP was just barely useable as a DD, the PPP will be very useable as a DD once call audio is worked out.

  Out of stock
Posted by: auggiefrog - 12-09-2021, 11:24 PM - Forum: General - Replies (4)

I’ve noticed a lot of products are out of stock, is there a update or anyway to learn when they will be in stock again?

Wish their was better communication on this, I personally have been waiting for the pinebook for about 6 months now. I’m beginning to assume it may be discontinued.
Any information is appreciated.

modem isn't online - Arch config bad?
Posted by: brb78 - 12-09-2021, 10:50 PM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Hardware - Replies (3)

can't seem to get cellular service on Arch. I tried `systemctl restart eg25-manager` as I recall that helping out on the original pinephone when the modem wasn't recognized but watching the status of the eg25-manager.service it just keeps repeating `Rescheduling upload since modem isn't online yet, in 30s`.

Tried Arch with no success. Also tried pmOS same results, no cellular and no option to toggle cellular on and off in Phosh settings. EG25 definitely gets warm, but no cellular connection. First thing I checked was the dip switches, and they're in the enabled position so that's not it.

Code:
mmcli -m any --command='AT+QNWINFO'

returns "error: couldn't find modem"

After purchasing the UBports Pinephone, I used it for a year -- mostly as my primary phone! I got a chance to try just about every linux mobile OS out there, file bug reports, and watch things as they developed in real time. I'm not a developer, I'm an end user and I'm afraid my assistance was minimal.

Finally had to bite the bullet and get an android phone, on which I've loaded LineageOS.

I just needed something more reliable.

But I want to thank the community for the fun and the support and the devs for the work they're putting in. You guys are awesome.

I'll check back in a year or so and see how Pinephone is getting along. I hope you guys win everything!
