Most functional distro, as of now
Posted by: Conjada - 01-27-2022, 07:13 PM - Forum: General Discussion of PinePhone Pro - Replies (34)

Is there any consensus as to which distro is, at present, the most functional in terms of using the Pinephone Pro as a phone?

All opinions welcome.

Equipment to deal with possible bricking
Posted by: Otter - 01-27-2022, 02:13 PM - Forum: General Discussion of PinePhone Pro - Replies (9)

Looking ahead and seeing what problems the pros on the various forums and chat channels have dealt with, it looks like there are a few bits of hardware needed to be sure you can easily rescue your phone.

The first is an extra card and a way to write images to it.
The Pine 64 shop offers this: https://pine64.com/product/64gb-class10-microsd-card/

Another item that the pros are using is a serial cable.
The Pine 64 shop offers one and it is a great deal: https://pine64.com/product/pinebook-pine...l-console/
I am going to make one, since it would take forever to get here. I will base mine on this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TXV...UTF8&psc=1
There are pre made serial cables for this sort of thing on Amazon, but all of them I have seen have the tip and ring reversed. For those who are new to the term tip and ring, they are ancient terms. The tip is the connection at the end of the jack. In this case a 3.5mm stereo jack. The ring is the middle connection and the shaft is the base. From what I have been able to find, it looks like the Pine64 standard is tip=rx, ring=tx, and the shaft=gnd. As I said before, most similar items on Amazon show the opposite for tip and ring.

Using the serial cable if you are old school like me, is going to be a pain but not a crazy pain. Expect a learning curve unless you have used one or you are the type that doesn't mind using a bash shell to configure things.

Another issue that has come up is completely discharged batteries. Apparently, if your battery is entirely discharged, then the software to control your battery charging is not going to have power and not be able to charge your battery. So it looks like a spare battery and an external charger might be smart to have.
The PineStore has one: https://pine64.com/product/pinephone-lithium-battery/ but it is currently out of stock. From the data I have gotten it matches with the Samsung EB-BJ700BBC,  EB-BJ700BBE, or EB-BJ700CBE from the 2015 J7 phone.

As far as a charger goes, it might be easy to make a simple charger if you can precisely control power and keep from charging too fast. I will be going with this item just for the convenience: https://www.amazon.com/Onite-Universal-B...B01JZLHTHG
Hopefully it works.

In any case, having an extra battery you can swap out is not a bad thing to have. Hopefully I never need the serial cable, but I have had cell phones brick before and I would rather have a way to unbrick mine ready.

Did i break my wifi with the keyboard?
Posted by: captchasolver - 01-27-2022, 11:36 AM - Forum: PinePhone Hardware - Replies (5)

Hello dear fellow pinephonians.

I recently got my pinephone keyboard and was too excited to search for proper instructions,
so i connected the keyboard, while the pinephone was running. I have no idea, if this was the
problem, or if i created the damage on some other way, but my wifi (also bluetooth) does not work anymore.

I am running arch linux with phosh. The wifi card is properly detected and can be disabled/enabled via phosh ui or nmcli,
but whatever i try, i can't seem to find any networks.
I also tried searching from the terminal, using

Code:
sudo iw dev wlan0 scan
but so far no luck.

I also tried disabling/enabling wifi with the tiny switch on the back on the pinephone. No luck as well.
Has this happened to anyone else and has anyone an idea, if this is fixable?

I am currently downloading megis multi-distro image, to see, if this still happens, when i use another system.

  SD card slot specs
Posted by: frimmel - 01-27-2022, 10:30 AM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Hardware - Replies (3)

I could not find detailed specifications wrt the SD card slot, only that it can use SDHC and SDXC cards. Does anyone know if the SD card slot supports UHS-II bus class (which has "two rows of contacts" on the UHXC card I believe)? Or, to be more specific of my needs, is it realistic to hope for SD card *write* speeds of 100MB/s?

I ask as I would like to use a class UHS-II and v90 SDXC card to stream from a StructureCore sensor (occipitals depth sensor). The scanner do work on the PinePhone PRO - I have successfully compiled and run it on the PRO. Output is about 9fps, twice the result for the original PinePhone, however, also with more computationally intensive options available. I only guess the reason is that computational power increased more than data throughput?

I used to have an icon on the desktop which let me do updates. It seems to have disappeared.
How do I access an installer of some kind to check/upgrade/instal etc. (package manager?)?
Cheers

  Firefox WebRender Hardware Acceleration
Posted by: Sinjur J - 01-26-2022, 06:10 PM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (1)

Has anyone managed to get WebRender hardware acceleration working for Firefox on the PinePhone? It seems that the previous method to force OpenGL no longer works. I tried to mess with some settings to see what I could get, but I don't really know what I'm doing. Has anyone had any luck?
