Exclamation Possible US legislative threat to Pinephone?
Posted by: Westslope - 03-26-2023, 02:41 PM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (9)

Hello, I stumbled upon something here in the US that might be a concern to Pinephone and users of non Android/iOS phones.
There are organizations and people pushing for US States to pass legislation to mandate "smartphones" and "tablets" come preloaded with family-friendly content filters by default.

While I'm not against the idea of having content filters to prevent minors from accessing hardcore pornography (labeled as "obscene material" in legislation), the way the proposed legislation is written makes it a criminal/fineable offense to sell devices that don't have such filters in place. While this may be a simple thing to do for Android and iOS, it seems like it may be a problem for librephones like Pinephone.

Here is the bill from Utah, which became law:
https://le.utah.gov/~2021/bills/hbillenr/HB0072.pdf

Here is a similar bill in Montana, which is in the legislative process. It has passed the House and is currently in a Senate committee.
https://leg.mt.gov/bills/2023/billhtml/HB0349.htm

I wanted to post this here because my legalese is not great and to see what others think.
Maybe this won't be a problem for Pinephone and it's users, but if my understanding is correct, it could be.

Shout Out to Pine64 and Terminal_Heat_Sink
Posted by: drh - 03-26-2023, 02:54 AM - Forum: PinePhone Hardware - No Replies

For the past six months or so I stopped using my PP because the screen had multiple cracks due to too many drops (it is a slippery device), and the lower right of the screen did not register the letter 'o' making it not very useful to type words with the screen keyboard.

After this period of no use, I went to check out its state and it needed charging. I forgot why, but I opened the back of the PP and noticed that the batter was swollen.

I decided to see if I could get the PP working again by replacing the battery and LCD touchscreen. The Pine64 store does not sell replacement battery's any more. I found an alternative (Replacement Battery for Samsung Galaxy J7 EB-BJ700BBC SM-J700 (2015 Ver)) from https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Pine64+Pine...ent/146110.

I purchased the replacement battery and it works with the PP.

I then ordered a replacement LCD touch screen from the Pine64 shop. Shipping was only about a week, which was faster than expected. I found a video by Terminal_Heat_Sink to be just what I needed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CgdAMhqSeA.

I guess my PP will be working for at least another two years.

BIG THANKS to Pine64 for the replacement LCD touchscreen, and for using a generic type battery, and to Terminal_Heat_Sink for the replacement part and video.

Broken earpiece on a PPP? Fixing guide!
Posted by: UltraBlack_ - 03-25-2023, 11:45 AM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Hardware - No Replies

Pine64 shipped me a PPP with a broken earpiece (resistance: No Load). I originally deemed it a software issue, until I tried the hardware testing image.

Required items: sidecutters, small pliers, a boxcutter (thin handle helps), thin tape (e.g tesa), A Xaomi Mi 4 earpiece (Thanks Funeral!)

Visual guide: https://chonkyrabbit.eu/files/Media/ppp-earpiece-fix/

For further help, feel free to reply. I hope I did not forget anything.

You might as well try your luck finding the original earpiece on the web. Measurements: 6x13x2mm

I hope this helps!

  New Pinebook pro won’t boot
Posted by: Generaltuxenburg - 03-25-2023, 10:49 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (4)

I’ve searched the forums but haven’t found any answers to my problem I received my PBP yesterday before work I decided to setup the laptop and update it everything was going smooth and I was generally happy with my purchase I started the update command it said something about outdated keys I updated those continued with the update and rebooted the device (all through the terminal) after that it hung on the restart screen for a moment then restarted it flashed the boot up screen for Manjaro with the loading symbol and then went blank after about 5 or so minutes I held the power button to force the device off and now I get a blank screen with everything EMMC/microsd/ and usb won’t even work my usb drive receives no power no matter the usb port I use (mine has a power indicator so I can tell if it’s in use or not) so I’m stuck I have no idea what to do the power light on PBP is solid green just no activity on the screen whatsoever do I need to disable my EMMC or mess with the SPI? Any help is appreciated thank you!

Any tips to improve the audio quality of calls on the PinePhone Pro?
Posted by: tux_life - 03-25-2023, 04:58 AM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Software - Replies (2)

Hi!
Phone calls work on my PinePhone Pro with Manjaro ARM Phosh Beta 30, but the audio quality is problematic for others (too quiet and/or noisy).
I tried with the (nearly) free custom firmware for Pinephone’s modem and editing the file /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/PinePhonePro/VoiceCall.conf . Currently I changed the line:

Code:
cset "name='ADC Capture Volume' 47"

and line:

Code:
cset "name='Mono ADC Capture Volume' 47"

With a value of 84 it seems that the audio quality is better, but it gets worse again after a suspend.
If I install pipewire, the audio gets too noisy.
The problem also remains with other distributions.
Any idea?
Thanks!

  Battery drain when off
Posted by: srs5694 - 03-24-2023, 04:30 PM - Forum: Pinebook Pro Hardware and Accessories - Replies (1)

I bought a Pinebook Pro recently, and I've been using it with Tow-Boot installed and dual-booting Ubuntu and Manjaro. I've been having problems with excessive battery drain, even when powered off. I just did a test, and in six hours, the battery dropped from 99% to 59% after shutting down Ubuntu 22.10.

Is this a known problem? Is there a workaround or fix? I'm quite able to compile a custom kernel, if that's what it takes, although a pointer to a suitable config file would be helpful.

Thanks!

Article: NuttX RTOS for PinePhone: USB with Enhanced Host Controller Interface
Posted by: lupyuen - 03-23-2023, 08:15 PM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (2)

Weeks ago we talked about porting Apache NuttX RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) to PinePhone, and how we might turn it into a Feature Phone.

But to make phone calls and send text messages, we need to control the LTE Modem over USB. Thus today we’ll build a USB Driver for NuttX on PinePhone…

1. What’s USB Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI)

2. Why it’s simpler than USB On-The-Go (OTG)

3. How we ported the USB EHCI Driver from NuttX to PinePhone

4. Handling USB Clocks and USB Resets on PinePhone (with tips from U-Boot Bootloader)

5. And the NuttX EHCI Driver boots OK on PinePhone!

Suspend/Resume Broken with Bootloader on SPI Flash
Posted by: xp19375 - 03-23-2023, 06:35 PM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (2)

I previously posted about having broken suspend/resume by installing tow-boot to the SPI flash.  My workaround was to just not use tow-boot and erase the SPI flash.  However recently I got an NVMe drive and installed Slackware on it.  I'd like to be able to boot from the NVMe drive directly, which I gather requires a boot loader on the SPI flash (I'd like to keep Manjaro on the eMMC if possible).

My questions are, what boot loader does the PBP/Manjaro use by default when it comes from the factory?  What is it doing that allows suspend/resume to work while other boot loaders break it?  What setups do people use to boot from an NVMe drive and have working suspend/resume?

Photo My PinePhone Pro does not read the micro SD card at all.
Posted by: tux_life - 03-23-2023, 03:34 PM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Hardware - Replies (7)

Hi!
My PinePhone Pro does not read the micro SD card at all.
I tried booting from SD card as indicated here: https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PinePhone_Pro#Boot_from_microSD_card_temporarily.
I also tried holding the RE button.
Nothing works and the operating system does not detect any SD card.
The microSD card is inserted all the way...
