Question Can't Boot from MicroSD (What Am I Missing)
Posted by: falken - 02-07-2023, 12:34 AM - Forum: Pinebook Pro Tutorials - Replies (10)

Been banging my head against a wall for like a week now trying to install different things like Armbian, PostMarketOS, and DietPi.

None of them boot. I've left my Pinebook Pro on for like 40 minutes watching the light flash.

Following the generic instructions of burning an img with Etcher and powering on with the SD card leads nowhere.

Tried two different MicroSD cards.

Tried using DD.

Nothing yet. Does anyone know what my next steps should be.

I feel like I'm missing something that everyone knows but somehow I can't find in any of the wiki pages, youtube videos, or forum posts.

Recover LUKS volume, rpmb, "Replay Protected Memory Block"
Posted by: regivanx - 02-06-2023, 12:35 PM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (2)

Hi,

For the record, I have two pinebook pro, pbp1 and pbp2, and they both crashed at the same time after an update and/or a reinstallation with manjaro-arm-installer.

pbp2 was fixed thanks to this thread.

pbp1 couldn't boot to emmc at all, even abnormally, but could boot normally to SDcard. It is from pbp1 that I repaired pbp2.

pbp1 is older than pbp2.

On pbp1, after booting on the SDcard:

Code:
$ ls /dev/mmcblk2*
mmcblk2
mmcblk2boot0
mmcblk2boot1
mmcblk2p1
mmcblk2p2

According to lsblk, mmcblk2 mmcblk2boot0 and mmcblk2boot1 are of type "Disk". mmcblk2p1 mmcblk2p2 are partitions.

mmcblk2p1 contains the /boot partition and mmcblk2p2 the root partition of the emmc, and was a bootable operating system before the crash.

mmcblk2p2 is an encrypted volume, usable with cryptsetup.

Since the problem of pbp1 and pbp2 seemed similar, I installed Tow Boot on the emmc of pbp1.

However, that didn't solve the problem: now Tow Boot informs me that the emmc is not bootable, but can still boot an OS on a USB stick or sdcard.

However, after installing Tow Boot on the emmc, the presentation of devices is different:

Code:
$ ls /dev/mmcblk2*
mmcblk2
mmcblk2boot0
mmcblk2boot1
mmcblk2p1
mmcblk2rpmb

and mmcblk2rpmb does not appear under the lsblk command.

However, testdisk says:

Code:
Disk /dev/mmcblk2 - 62 GB / 58 GiB CHS 1908480 4 16

The harddisk (62 GB / 58 GiB) seems too small! (< 803 GB / 562 GiB)
Check the harddisk size: HD jumper settings, BIOS detection...

The following partition can't be recovered:
Partition Start End Size in sectors
> Linux filesys. data 500001 1178983610 1178983610

[ Continue ]
LUKS 2 (Data size unknown) 603 GB / 561 GiB
  • Is mmcblk2rpmb another name for mmcblk2p2, or does it have nothing to do with it?

According to wikipedia, the initials "rpmb" stands for "Replay Protected Memory Block", a volume requiring authentication before it can be accessed (authentication in addition to LUKS?)
  • Do you think it is still possible to access the mmcblk2p2 encrypted volume?
  • Do you think installing Tow Boot on the first few sectors of the emmc made mmcblk2p2 permanently inaccessible?

I ask these two questions beforehand because if mmcblk2p2 is permanently inaccessible, I have to reinstall everything.

  Newbie with immediate issue
Posted by: jasonumd - 02-06-2023, 08:50 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (1)

Hi everyone. Newbie here and am having an immediate issue. First, my machine arrived with a malfunctioning screen. Replacement screen arrived and was installed easily. I booted and performed some application updates. Upon reboot my screen is black. I've seen this issue reported by others. I'm trying to reinstall Manjoo to the emmc. It boots just find from a microsd card and I want to use the installer. However, my network is disabled and no commands I issue will enable it. Has this happened to anyone who found a solution?

Thanks so much
Jason

[Mobian] No return from locked phone
Posted by: arno_nuehm - 02-06-2023, 06:43 AM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Software - Replies (1)

Hello there,

using the 20230129 installer image for Mobian, the installation on the eMMC went through fine, but everytime the phone locks itself or is manually locked with the power button, there is no coming back to the login screen. The phone stays dark, but is still running, because changing the volume with buttons still works.

Has anyone encountered the same problem or a solution for that behaviour?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

i think it might be nice to operate the pinephone with a stylus, especially if you scale the apps down.

is that supported? what type of stylus would i need to buy to just operate the touch screen?

  Discover - "He's dead, Jim"
Posted by: jojuma - 02-05-2023, 05:05 AM - Forum: Manjaro on PinePhone - Replies (7)

Hello,

I reactivated my Pinephone KDE CE with Manjaro/Plasma Mobile after quite a time. I ran a huge set of updates which caused only problems. I decided not to deal with them.

I flashed the latest available version of the OS and everything worked fine. While Discover said, that the system is up to date, pacman reported quite a bunch of updates. Since pacman is native to Manjaro, I run the updates.

Since then, whenever I try to run Discover, it always quits after a short time of loading with the message "He's dead Jim".

What could I do about this?

I can see some information in this crash info tool, but you can only read half of it, since it's outside the viewable area and it can't be brought into sight (neither drag/swipe nor screen rotation possible)

  Query on available OS
Posted by: thrillho - 02-05-2023, 04:41 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Quartz64 - Replies (4)

Hi guys,

I'm a newbie to Pine64 but have been following with keen interest for several years and have a query regarding the Pine64 single-board computers.

I am exploring the applications of my Raspberry Pi for some time and want to buy another but would prefer to support this community - so, do the single-board computers work the same as a Pi? Would I be able to flash all the same operating systems as a Pi with for example the Raspberry Pi imager?

Kind regards.

A dock/hub that works with PPP (for ur information)
Posted by: miaoish - 02-05-2023, 02:50 AM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Accessories - Replies (1)

I received my ppp a week ago and dived into it immediately. One feature I really want to try is the desktop experience as advertised.
I tested the Apple USB-C to HDMI adaptor I had (A1708), it only worked once (Mobian, without power input, attached hdmi cable, no usb device, must plug in before power on ppp). The apple adaptor usually works with all devices I had, PCs, Macs, iPad, android phone...just not PPP

I also tested on my Lenovo docking station, thunderbolt, of course not working.

So, I went out and bought two docks available in small stores (I have no idea how to call them, dock or hub. They all printed "hub" on the cover, but with power input, I just call them docks), these are the results:

1. Belkin usb-c multimedia hub, 60w passthrough, F4U092, ~ 86USD: hdmi worked out of the box with Mobian, PmOS, Kali, Arch. I used 15w/18w iPad power adaptor, I found no problem with hot plugging. Just switch the display scale to 100% before hot-plugging it should work very fast with no problem. usb 3.0 ports worked, the ethernet port did not work.

2. Apple A1708 & Lenovo docking station: not working, none of the ports were working

3. MoMax Onelink 8-in-1 usb-c hub, 60w passthrough, ~43USD: usb 3.0 worked. hdmi had issues with flickering screen with/without power input, all OS were the same.
I tested this dock on my ipad, mac, worked with no issue.

I think brand (chip quality?) matters. Should have just used Belkin...
