Have you physically opened the case to see if the antenna connector is connected? It's the long cable on the left, snaking down from the main board to the usb board.

I assume you mean take out the screws and really open it up. I have only taken the back off to get at the microSD and SIM cards.

Just to mention that my mobile connection became intermittent, and the cable _seemed_ to be on okay, but then I removed it and put it on again anyway, and it's been solid since then.

Have you tried a different SIM? A lot of folks are having serious trouble with AT&T.

I think this is part of the problem. If I wedge a piece of folded paper behind the sim card when I insert it then I'm pretty easily able to get a 3G connection at least.
