@as400 Thank you a lot! This info about the needed modules is exactly what I was looking for! Next time I try installing it I will include these modules and see if I can get the display to turn on.

Is this supposed to already work in a console installation or will it only work with Xorg running?

Since kernel 5.10.4 made it recently into Debian unstable I am going to give it a try and see if adding the mentioned modules to initramfs helps to bring up the display.

Is it possible the device for the serial console changed recently? And sorry for using the crappy "official" console cable that eats up some characters.

I also tried the following, but I still didn't see anything on the console:

This was not the case with earlier kernel (I remember trying with 5.6 and 5.7).

Update: For the current kernel to work you have to compile u-boot with "PREBOOT=y" disabled as mentioned by toons. Then it boots. See here for details:

Update 2: Well, it boots but it freaks out when reading the sdcard. I had the same trouble with earlier kernels in the past, but it worked from internal eMMC, so it might be worth trying. Here's the log:

Update 3: I was able to boot up the device now from eMMC and it works fine so far. However, I can't get the display working. I added all the mentioned modules and they seem to be loaded. The green LED also turned on. However, the display itself is still not lit up. Is there anything apart from loading the modules that is supposed to do the trick?

I can't get 5.10 or 5.11-rc to boot.

I am using display enabled u-boot so if I compile u-boot without "usb start" preboot command then I will have no keyboard to interact with u-boot menu.

Seems to me that u-boot has problems with usb subsystem as for now and something has also changed in the kernel since I have no such problems with 5.9.

@kuleszdl - if mentioned by me modules are indeed loaded (or baked into the kernel) and you still have problems getting display to work - check kernel config for CONFIG_ROCKCHIP_CDN_DP. It should not be set.

So, you think that recompiling the kernel with this option not set should do the trick?

I had similar problems with cdn_dp.
So I think it's worth trying.

@as400 This did the trick, thank you soo much! Finally, the pbp got close to being useful for me!

I am now in the process of finishing the updated guide I have written for my blog that covers all the pbp-specific steps in detail (u-boot compilation, additional modules in initramfs, self-compiled kernel). Stay tuned.

Yes, I had this problem but long time ago. Finally I got angry and I compiled my own kernel and created my own initramfs that can be reused with any kernel. It's also very small.



I'm not sure how to help you as afaik Devuan uses sysvinit instead of systemd. The problem probably lies in initramfs not loading display modules or not doing this early enough.



If you recompile kernel, with display modules I mentioned baked in, you should not have these problems.

@MNtinkerer You are welcome. However, the "real" contributions regarding the PBP come from other people in this community who developed and upstreamed all the patches and found out which extra modules need to be loaded and config parameters to be changed. I had to condense these various bits of information anyways to get my PBP finally running. The purpose of the guide is to prevent others from struggling with this themselves.

@as400 Thank you and yeah, compiling in these modules is also what I thought about but I still don't understand why they don't get loaded in initramfs already. I always thought the purpose of its modules section is to do exactly that. I will try experimenting with the rootdelay-parameter before I bake them in since I wanted to stay as close to the config shipped by Debian as possible (they will almost certainly not bake in these modules into their generic arm64 kernel just because one of the hundreds of supported devices needs them, and personally I am a big fan of generic vs. device-specific kernels). Update: Setting rootdelay=10 did *not* help, the password prompt came later but the modules were not loaded before the pw prompt was shown on the serial console.
