Yeah-- after rolling back the sleep.conf and boot.txt changes, closing the laptop lid works as expected. later, I'll try re-applying them one at a time to see which one is the problem.
You're right, I just reset everything but this time I only changed SuspendState to mem in /etc/systemd/sleep.conf and that's causing the pinebook pro to wake up after the lid is closed if you revert it back to 'freeze' it stays suspended but is not using S3.
