"There is import duty/tax due on your shipment. The amount is GBP 49.77. "
Is this expected to be paid by me or will it clear automatically?
Ignore this I've paid it. It occurred to me this isn't something pine64 have any control over Still a bit of a sting though.
I know we will have to pay import tax but £49.77 on a $150 purchase seems excessive. I tried an online import tax calculator and it came out at £27.
You've got the £150 purchase plus whatever you paid in shipping. Now add any duty due. Now apply VAT to all of that. DHL will charge you the duty, the VAT, plus £11 handling fee (or 2.5% if that's greater). They should be giving you a breakdown of this. Welcome to the wonderful world of personal imports - it can be a bit of a shock the first time, but after that you factor it into the price you expect to end up paying. Sometimes you get lucky. Handling fees vary by carrier, so it's worth checking before you pick.
