RockPro64 as Synology NAS alternative!?
#1
Hello all here,

I am new with Pine64, had a chat lately with a friend regarding NAS and it's power consumption.

I am thinking about switching from my Synology 713+ NAS to a Pine64 RockPro64-4GB NAS.

My 713+ Synology uses about 40Watt's constant incl. 2 WD RED 3TB HDD's (in RAID).
Seems that the Synolofy HDD's don't fall asleep after some time

Can you guys tell me about your the RockPro64 power consumption as a NAS with 2 HDD's ?

Started reading here:
https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/NASCase

Some more questions:
You can connect only one fan on the PCB, in the NAS-case or on the CPU, what do you advise? Or can it run only with the largest heatsink?

As OS OpenMediaVault is suggested, this is best to use or do you have an alternative?
On the Synology (which I only use as Storage and hosting photo's) I use the programm "Photostation", what do you guys prefer to use?

Between my two Synology's I use "Hyper Backup" to sync from one to another.
I believe "Hyper Backup" is a Rsync tool?
Is it possible to Sync from OpenMediaVault to `Synology #2 ?

Thx!

Hello,

1.
  • 8,4 - 9,3 Watt mit 2 Stück 2,5 Zoll HDD (hdparm inactive)
  • 5,6 Watt mit 2 Stück 2,5 Zoll HDD (hdparm aktive)
With two 3,5 Zoll HDDs 25 - 30W

2. You don't need an fan, when you only use your NAS as data storage.

3. I am using only debian for my NAS and NFS for LAN. Backups i do with rsync.
Sorry for any mistakes. English is not my native language

Frank, what do you use as "photostation" ?

WD RED 3TB 3,5"

HDDhttps://storagereview.com/western_digital_red_nas_hard_drive_review_wd30efrx

Specs: Power 2TB/3TB: read/write 4.4W, idle 4.1W, standby/sleep .6W

Do your HDD's in combination with the Pine64 NAS get to sleep when not used?

@hemertje

I use nextcloud for my photos. Nextcloud don't run on my NAS, nextcloud runs on an hosted server. I only save backups on my NAS.
