RockPro64 Official Kernel Support
#1
When can we expect full support for the RockPro64 in the regular Linux kernel? I'm just curious because it would be kind of nice if it were possible to use an official distro image (i.e. Debian) instead of having to depend on Ayufan and others to keep making images for the RockPro64.

Open source developers are working toward this direction using SPI Flash to host uboot.

I think "don't hold your breathe" is a more realistic answer. Check the wiki section about what works, and especially the link at the bottom of that section to the RockChip 4.4/mainline status and you realise why this is still very much a hacker board.

Getting uboot in SPI will be a great step. The 4.20 kernel support usually means the device tree has been up streamed but it doesn't, e.g., sort full open source graphics support for T-860.
  • ROCKPro64 v2.1 2GB, 16Gb eMMC for rootfs, SX8200Pro 512GB NVMe for /home, HDMI video & sound, Bluetooth keyboard & mouse. Arch (6.2 kernel, Openbox desktop) for general purpose daily PC.
  • PinePhone Pro Explorer Edition, daily driver, rk2aw & U-boot on SPI, Arch/SXMO & Arch/phosh on eMMC
  • PinePhone BraveHeart now v1.2b 3/32Gb, Tow-boot with Arch/SXMO on eMMC

I think the Support on 4.20, should be better than what we have now.
But its a Work in progress.

On the Open Source Graphics Driver, there are great expectations, at least from me since there have been very good advances on it, with faster implementations that the existing one.

You can check the last developments on it, directly from Alyssa blog at X.Org Developer’s Conference
This new Driver targets:

– Midgard (Mali Txxx)
- Bifrost (Mali Gxx)

But it is Also a Work in Progress, in October were made great advances on it.

Just here to ask for updates, what is the current status ?
Looks like mrfixit2001 managed to get most of the features to work (wifi with pine64 adapter and NVME through PCIE), but I am interested in having a ubuntu bionic with mate installed to an nvme disk. those do not all work yet on ayufan's images that I tested.

edit: booting FROM NVMe might be a nope; just stick on eMMC.

Bunch of fixes went in to mainline 5.2 kernel: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ker...=rockpro64

Anyone tried it out?

Perhaps Manjaro guys? I'd ping Strit in the chats

I'm running 5.2.0 now; it works well, but needed device tree changes to access the PCIE bus.
