Hello everyone! First let me say that I a complete noob when it comes to the Pine64 or any other small computer. My background is industrial computers (CNC, Automation, and Robotics, and DAQ) using windoze and MSDos. Since I retired, yes an old geezer, I decided to pick up a Pine64 to tinker with to learn Linux and Android.
I have a need for such a project such as this head unit. The wife and I are building an Expedition Vehicle. One of the open items on the list was an integrated navigation and communication device. I have looked at doing a MiniPC and off the shelf software, but find there is always something lacking plus the problem with dust and dirty environment cooling.
A few items I would like to see:
I maybe asking too much of one Pine64.
It would be nice to add a front camera using the same hardware and record both front and rear like a dash cam stored on SD card or SSD.
12 VDC compatible I/O board or boards. Possibly something controlled via I2C or CAN bus for remote I/0 using the I2C POT board. Have an idea for remote relay box for accessories also would like to monitor my auxiliary batteries for voltage and current draw. Found these, but know nothing of the company.

Picture a screen with virtual switches and digital info. Saves a lot of additional wiring and switch mounting. I don't know the distance limit on I2C this is the reason I mentioned CAN bus.
Add a Griffin PowerMate Bluetooth via A2DP and AVCRP. Less reaching for the screen. Can use one button to scroll and select.

I like the suggestions so far for Audio and GPS. Plenty of navigation apps with offline maps available already.
I have plenty of mounting space. Maybe splitting this into two head units one for audio, navigation, and DVR and the second one for the accessory switch panel with DAQ.
I could even do a third just for the DVR if it gets to be a problem.
Sorry for being long winded but a lot of ideas doing the roundabout in my head not knowing what direction to turn.
