Pine64 Head Unit

For those that have done this, how are you mounting the LCD touchscreen in the car? The only way I see is to use double sided tape to tape it to something flat (lexan, etc) then mount the lexan into the factory mounting spot. I don't see any place to securely screw into, which I would prefer using screws to mount it as tape would be a semi-permanent solution that may wreck the screen should you have to remove it from the mount.

I haven't gotten my lcd yet but I'll take a look when I do. Hopefully that will be soon. I would guess that some sort of plastic bracket that can clip on would be the best solution.

I would look at the drawings for the play box (that's what they are calling it right?) And maybe take the front piece and then draw a new back piece that has the mounting options that you want and then use a 3d printer to make your bracket.

Also, has anyone found any android versions that boot faster? A 1 minute boot time would kinda suck in a car

As a starter you might want to have a look at http://i-carus.com/shop/ , scroll down to the parts where you find a "2DIN housing "iCarus" with integrated switch on/off toggle, rotary button and active USB hub". Or go to http://www.carav-parts.com/ and search for your car brand and model.

There is certainly more out there and collecting these parts here would certainly be useful.

Hello! Since my previous reply I didn't worked a lot on my Car PC project, but I've ordered a 7" touch panel usb, and an usb GPS receiver, so I hope they will works with the pine Smile
And since my previous reply, I've changed my car, and my new one have a 2din, so I'm thinking of building a full radio in 2din enclosure
So I've looked to the touchscreen they sell on the store, but a lot too big to fit 2din, so I've looked at the datasheet and found the LCD they use (Feyiang FY07024DI26A30-D, about 15$ on Aliexpress).
With this one I could use the direct DSI connector, no longer need of a screen controler.
But I need touchscreen, and I can't found the reference of the touch panel they use with the touchscreen pine64 sell. Anyone have informations about that?

I will keep you in touch for my GPS receiver Wink

Hello everyone! First let me say that I a complete noob when it comes to the Pine64 or any other small computer.  My background is industrial computers (CNC, Automation, and Robotics, and DAQ) using windoze and MSDos. Since I retired, yes an old geezer, I decided to pick up a Pine64 to tinker with to learn Linux and Android.

I have a need for such a project such as this head unit. The wife and I are building an Expedition Vehicle. One of the open items on the list was an integrated navigation and communication device. I have looked at doing a MiniPC and off the shelf software, but find there is always something lacking plus the problem with dust and dirty environment cooling.

A few items I would like to see:
I maybe asking too much of one Pine64.

It would be nice to add a front camera using the same hardware and record both front and rear like a dash cam stored on SD card or SSD.

12 VDC compatible I/O board or boards. Possibly something controlled via I2C or CAN bus for remote I/0 using the I2C POT board. Have an idea for remote relay box for accessories also would like to monitor my auxiliary batteries for voltage and current draw.  Found these, but know nothing of the company.

Picture a screen with virtual switches and digital info. Saves a lot of additional wiring and switch mounting. I don't know the distance limit on I2C this is the reason I mentioned CAN bus.

Add a Griffin PowerMate Bluetooth via A2DP and AVCRP. Less reaching for the screen. Can use one button to scroll and select.

I like the suggestions so far for Audio and GPS.  Plenty of navigation apps with offline maps available already.

I have plenty of mounting space. Maybe splitting this into two head units one for audio, navigation, and DVR and the second one for the accessory switch panel with DAQ.
I could even do a third just for the DVR if it gets to be a problem.

Sorry for being long winded but a lot of ideas doing the roundabout in my head not knowing what direction to turn.
