performance of the pine64+ 2GB on android LCD ver
#1
Hey guys. Finally assembled my playbox and downloaded the LCD android distro to play with.

This was 2 days ago. Had lots of dramas trying to get it to work with known working SD cards that work no worries on Debian or Ubuntu. Finally got it to work. Not sure why but it just started working.

So today I decide that I might try a 3dmark bench test...

It took 45 mins for it to boot up. It was alternating between freezing on optimizing apps, boot looping or booting to blank screen with lines.

Now its running its forgotten any system settings. Great... I finally reconnected to WiFi and downloaded 3dmark.

Apart from the whole thing being slow I can't see any reasons why I can't get an OK score.

Running the opengles 2.0 test here are my results.

Pretty poor.

This result is from my mobile. The huawei g8. Same test.

Anyhow I'm really not impressed by this board. Even when I tried kodi on the normal version, it struggled to play even a 1gig movie file along the network.

Somehow this board got marketed as a fully developed $15 media center appliance; it is a lie.

This PineA64 is a fabulous development board (for hardware & software) and is a wonderful computer-- I have used mine the summer (experiment) as a replacement for my desk workstations... developing GPIO on one, and GPS on the other... plus all the normal things I use a desktop PC for.

But, this board is NOT a media center appliance; its weak link is video, and that applies even to Android and Remix. If you want to use video, run Android. If you want a computer run either debian mate, or ubuntu mate. But, it is not a media center... not even.

I'm very impressed with this board ! ... but not for the reasons you're testing it for.

I have found 1 good use for this so far. A pineapple. Device for cracking wireless networks and mitm attacks. But that's on Debian.

Probably a poor quality SD card.  I had the same issue until I replaced the card with a Samsung

Good point. I did try with 2 different 16gb SD cards. Both work without any problems with Linux. One is a Kingston and the other is a Verbatim. Both class 10. The only card I have had issues with was a 16gb lexcon. When I tried with Ubuntu it would sit there trying to get dhcp on boot and then time out. Other things were a bit buggy but can't remember right now what they were.

I'll try with the 64gb drive I got with the playbox kit.

Im moving house today so it will have to be after the weekend. My pineapple is running on the 64gb drive so I'll make a backup first.

We recommend the Samsung evo plus Class 10 cards.

Hello. I use Kingston class 10 microsd.

i got myself a couple of samsung SD cards locally today. all of them are the class 10 EVO cards. running a 3dmark i much the same result but overall the system is much more stable and usable. samsung seem to be the way to go.

i got an extra for my pineapple that ill rebuild it bigger and better. if there is a call for it here i can write up a tutorial.

Samsung EVO or EVO Plus with either 32 GB or 64 GB show the best results in situations where random IO is important. Lower and higher capacities show lower random IO scores, same applies to Samsung Pro (theoretically higher sequential speed but since Pine64 is limited to 23 MB/s here anyway and random IO is lower the simple EVO 32/64GB are the best buy currently)
