Yep. I'm starting to think it is just my carrier (Verizon)
It's not your carrier. I have Verizon (via US Mobile) working just fine on Manjaro and Mobian. On UT, same problem as you. It has to do with Ofono. They are still working on it.

Any chance of using something like modemmanager instead?

<Any chance of using something like modemmanager instead?>

On Manjaro Lomiri yes. On UBports, they are committed to Ofono. But, as they upgrade Ubuntu, QT, and Ofono, the fix will eventually become apparent. Right now, no one really knows what needs to be fixed with Ofono. Need a modem specialist with good understanding of VoLTE, modemmanager, and ofono.

Does that mean there is a chance of getting service on Manjaro Lomiri? I hav ebeen following the project for a little while, but my impression was that it still wasn't working well enough.

There's been a lot of progress very recently. But, still no joy on calls with Verizon sim. If you need calls/sms functional, stick with mmcli based distros for now - mobian, manjaro phosh, plasma, etc.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get any of them working

Verizon (directly not MVNO) requires calling them and typing some code combination with the dialer. It's in the forums somewhere. Search Verizon VoLTE in the search bar. Verizon via MVNO just works. Mine runs with Verizon MVNO US Mobile and all works with Mobian and Manjaro Phosh. Partially working with Manjaro Plasma last I checked.

It also requires setting the right apn for data access

I have Postmarket version, texting works fine on Patriot mobile, calls do not.

There was a letter "L" to the right of the Cellular icon, anyone know what that is?

Guess I will use Mobian for now, but UT is really nice apart from no phone...kind of funny. A phone you can't use to make calls! LOL

L is LTE - 4G

If you had an L when making a call, that means it was trying to do so using VoLTE. VoLTE is not yet set up right for a lot of people on UT. It does work on mine with Mint mobile. Switch to 3G and you can make calls with UT. VoLTE is properly configured with Mobian.
