Modem Firmware: update manually or wait?
#1
Hi there, I don't think this is really a mobian issue, nevertheless: We were told the other day that linux is running on the modem and that this will facilitate firmware upgrades. Now I wonder: Would I still need to upgrade as described here https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=11815
or has this method become obsolete and I'd rather wait for a proper firmware?

The answer might be somewhere but I didn't find it? Anyone else knows?

The vendor firmware referenced in your link is as "proper" as can be at this moment. It'll improve power consumption, responsiveness recovering from device sleep and adds VoIP profiles for certain providers. The modem already runs Linux both pre and post firmware upgrade.

The efforts of replacing the firmware's userland by @biktorgj and @megous (incredible work BTW!) may offer us more options in the future. At this moment, the results are awesome, but not usable by everyone.

It looks like a great update, however my Pinephone is working for what I need right now and although I'm very familiar with the Linux command line (I worked with ancient Unix systems back when dinosaurs roamed the earth), I have not messed around at all with modem commands. So I figure why risk having something go horribly wrong. Since I leave the phone off when not in use, power consumption and wake from sleep are not serious issues.  Might have a go at it sometime in the future.

I just updated the firmware following  @Subsentient's instructions  https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=11815 and it worked flawlessly on Mobian.
If you follow the instructions there is almost no way of messing it up I'd say.
