Skins for the community
#1
We began discussing skinning for the PBP in another thread, and I thought it would be best to start a dedicated thread.

I'm going to get with the Pine team to see if they have any assets we can use to make a template for the PBP (and the logo file for those who want to rep their stuff.)

I have a few questions for the community, though, about what you'd like to see.

Would you prefer simpler or more ornate/vivid designs?

Do you prefer a wide or restricted use of colors? (Blacks/greys vs. colors)

Would you like to see skins for:

1. the lid only
2. the lid and palm rest plastic
3. as complete a skin as possible (lid, palm rest, bottom)

EDIT:
Another question I want to ask, so it can also be explored, is there a preference for gloss or matte? I can't guarantee a matte option, but I can look into it if there's enough interest.

I'm going to try and come up with some fun original designs in my spare time, but I want the community to have a chance to suggest the kind of things they want to see and are interested in. (Visual aids are a bonus, since a lot can be lost in translation putting the description of an appearance into words.)

EDIT 2: Unfortunately, the opportunity I had to get press time for these did not come to fruition, and it will take a serious investment on my part to secure a run elsewhere. For now, feel free to use the PDF templates I've shared in this thread to setup and commission your own skins.

My vote:
1: Lid would be nice
2: Simple would remain consistent with initial design, just spice it up a bit more. I like the idea of adding a little protection, and repping the logo.

Thanks for adding that! I was going to add your suggestion from the other post after I got back to my desk (it'd be no fun on mobile.)

EDIT:

Here's a quick mockup of the idea that was pitched by @MrTester (if I got it wrong, let me know) that would place a centered dark grey Pine logo on the lid. (Sorry for the picture/quality, but there's not many images of the PBP closed, flat, and overhead available to grab from the web.) It will use either a black background, or if possible/looks good, a transparent vinyl that lets the magnesium alloy show through.

I'm glad to hear someone is interested in making skins for this device! Thank you!

I usually do lid and palm rest. To me the bottom seems like a utility surface rarely seen. But I'm in on a skin whether it includes bottom cover or not so, pun intended, no skin off my nose if the community wants to go 3 piece.

That said most of the questions about design are going to be subjective. I'm usually keen on something more subdued and then the super fun and colorful stickers go on top!

Count me in for a skin if/when they become available.

I feel it's probably my best possible contribution I could make to this great community, since I don't have the skills that many of our hardware and software heroes have. I'm glad there's interest in some skins!

I completely agree about the subjectiveness. That's exactly why I'm asking the community. Obviously I won't be able to produce every idea that could be pitched, but this way the community can voice their preferences and the most popular ones can become a reality! (That and the creative juices don't always flow freely. Having community-driven designs gives me a kind of brief to work off of, and I can easily focus on making those and not stressing if I hit a creative slump/brain fart.)

Thinking more about this, unless Pine is interested in being an active part of distribution, it may start off as the community being given access to the print files and suggested vinyl to use, and then each user can pick and choose between which panels they actually want.

Obviously we have a good ways to go until we know for sure how that will play out, though.

Imgur told me the image might contain erotic imagery and made me click through and age-accept box. Then I saw that the image of a skinned PBP is, in fact, erotic. Laptop porn is a real thing and that is a lovely image.

;-P

I'm in for skin, but I'm going to pass on PBP. Will you make a similar offering for PineTab if/when it emerges from it's cocoon?

I can be talked into PineTab/Phone skins. They'll honestly be the easiest to layout and produce given having only the back surface to decal.

EDIT: Request made with Luke for back panel specs of PinePhone and Tab. I'll make the templates available to the community, once they're setup. I'll probably focus on PBP designs first, until the PinePhone/Tab start being released to the public or non-dev forum members.

Another quick q for anyone and everyone, how many would like to have their skin also represent their OS of choice? (Such as incorporating a stylized Debian logo, or adapting a Manjaro wallpaper to a skin?)

Very much interested in it. In fact I already ordered some vinyl foil a couple days ago. I haven't started designing anything, but I do have access to a laser cutter, so I'd be happy to help any way I can as soon as I get my PBP (I'm in the December batch).
