I uninstalled the updates and cleared the cache for Google Play Services (but not the data) and I still have the same experience: Play Store stops running before I can do anything useful with it. Glad it worked for you, I must have a truly corked-up version somehow.
At least while I was messing with my Pine today, I learned that the movies I download in MP4 format from archive.org play just fine. They're all public domain films; the newest one I looked at was from 1951. But I'm from before that so its fine by me.
I suppose they play OK because they aren't subject to DRM. Why Google will rent/loan you DRM-encrusted videos and not have their own player, or any other player I've tried on Andoid, be able to show them is beyond nonsense! With a business plan like that it's a wonder they can make payroll.
