Debian Video Performance/"Driver" Install

So basically I've installed the debian image form the downloads page of the pine64 website, and everything went perfectly. Only problem I have is that video performance is horrible. (lagging animations, choppy youtube video, downloaded video files won't open, etc) Pretty sure I need to install a codec to play the video files - haven't gotten around to installing the codecs or VLC. I'm assuming there's a driver I need to install for the gpu. I tried installing one, and got confused (kinda new to this), so any help is greatly appreciated

If you're using one of the longsleep based images, there are shellscripts in /usr/local/sbin that can help you fix problems, install updates to the kernel and resolve some other issues.

How did you get it to play youtube? gnash refuses to do so for me, and afaik there is no adobe flash for arm64 debian.

Youtube supports HTML5 video. I assume he made it run in some HTML5-compliant browser.

Huh where did you get that from? Please do not spread rumors or false information. I am not working with Allwinner or on the mali drivers your are presumably talking about.

Mali is a 3D accelerator, and you strictly need it only if you want to play 3D games. And Mali has nothing to do with H.264 decoding. Some explanations are here: http://www.cnx-software.com/2013/12/10/m...e-vpu-does

Still Mali may be sometimes used for drawing a nicely looking UI of the media player. That's why Kodi also depends on 3D drivers in addition to the strictly required VPU drivers. More simplistic media players can just do hardware accelerated video decoding job in fullscreen or in a plain looking rectangular window without any extra fluffiness and fancy 3D effects.
