Rock64 won't boot
#1
Hi:

I have a new Rock64. So far I am 0/2 in terms of getting OSes to boot. First I tried DietPi (DietPi_ROCK64-ARMv8-Bullseye.7z) . Followed directions, unzipped OS, flashed with Etcher.  It never booted just had a flashing red light. Next I tried one of the recommended Ambian (Armbian_22.08.8_Rock64_jammy_current_5.15.74_xfce_desktop). This was one actually booted into the command line but once I made a user and tried to get the desktop going it crapped out on me. I just ended up with a black screen with a flashing white cursor in upper left hand corner. Both these issues seem to be in the forums/online but with no apparent solutions. The Rock64 DietPi thread goes back years ago.  So if anyone has recently successfully installed and run one of the recommended OSes in the getting started guide for the Rock64 please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just as an update, the non desktop version of Armbian booted up successfully. Armbian_22.08.8_Rock64_bullseye_current_5.15.74.img.xz. As best I can tell you just have to try different versions and maybe it will work for you. I also think there may be something where the OS is not automatically expanding to fill SD card and maybe i need to do that manual with the newer Armbian versions.

While Arbmian is listed as supported/recommended on the Pine64 website. On the Armbian webiste it doesn't list this as one of their supported boards and only as community supported. Would be nice to see Rock64 support an OS. Had hoped my device would be substitute for a very popular not in stock product but the lack of support is challenging.

Would be nice to see someone paying for the support expenses.

If Armbian says "community supported" its the same as any other OS - amateur support only.

Yes that is what I meant. Would be nice to see Pine64 help support Armbian given it is listed on webpage as the OS to use.

PINE64 is a community. If it says "community-supported" then it is exactly what it is.

> PINE64 is a community.

Pine64 is a vendor (one of many) that sells HW without (proper) software support. Everything else is BS.

I have successfully installed Debian not too long ago. I would recommend going for Bookworm.

That's actually not true, you're confusing the PINE64 community (pine64.org) with the Pine Store Ltd. (pine64.com). The Pine Store Ltd. produces the devices and sells them -> https://www.pine64.org/philosophy/. The "sells hardware without proper software support" comparison also falls flat.

Matt,
The H64 has few software options and the GPU never developed much developer traction. I believe there's a version of Android that works with it, but I think that was it when I got mine. It's still sitting around collecting dust, I should at least drop armbian and have another linux shell/lightweight server type SBC

it doesn't get happy
it doesn't get sad
it just runs programs
