I had similar issues and was looking for something that could handle calls reliably on my setup. Ended up using Active Calls call center software, and it worked better than I expected. It picked up SIP settings fast, and audio quality was solid without tweaking too many things. If the default apps are giving you trouble, it might be worth a try just to see if it gets things running smoother.
