No phone number nor even carrier required, strictly speaking (you can send over Wi-Fi, like email)! Many times I have not had cell service, but was able to send messages over XMPP (via Wi-Fi, which can be found all over nowadays (Walmart, McDonalds, etc.))!

I gave up trying to explain this to normies. But maybe I find an audience here.
I got the feature/handy branch of Dino to compile directly on the PinePhone (I'm running Mobian) with only minor trouble. It's working quite well! I can maybe write a step by step guide if anyone needs that, but most of what you should need is in my comment there.
