So far I get a blank screen after booting, but it looks as if the system started (the power button to turn it off works)

SUSE / openSUSE said many times they want to have more compatibility with ARM systems.
They uses Pinephone to demonstrate openSUSE ability to run on "unusual" hardware.
Pinephone and all Pine64 hardware are very similar, so we can expect quick results on openSUSE compatibility
