OK currently typing this from my RockPro64 which is getting internet connection from the PinePhone USB-C  

Main change is to edit USB-gadget network manager profile and change ipv4 method from manual to shared. I appreciate this changes the original gadget configuration, however with suitable entries in /etc/dnsmasq.conf I now have automatic IP address assignment to the RockPro64 and ssh still works.

I need to check all my steps before doing a more coherent write-up.
