You shouldn't have to reverse engineer anything. There are schemattics (although it is also useful to take a look at the device tree to see how the power key is specially handled):

Based on the schematic and devicetree, I'm pretty certain the power key is a simple physical button and it bypasses the keyboard controller entirely. There's a signal running directly from the 30 pin connector to the PMIC PWRON pin, I think this is the power key.
