Now the power off dialogue confirmation appears on screen. I just wasn't pressing the hardware power button in long enough.

Old Man Syndrome  Idea

There's a Shut Down button on the system indicator.
Swipe from the time at the top and while dragging down, slightly swipe to the right.
You'll see the other options there like lock Wink
