Looks like I found a mild reason why UBPorts for pinephone hasn't seen much progress.

Looks like one of the main threads on the ubports forums was updated notifying a de-prioritization. Not sure when this happened, but it makes sense that we haven't a lot of changes recently. This would explain why the issues board has gone stale and why it seems to be no changes for at least a few weeks on the dev builds. With this in mind, I still don't consider this OS fully abandoned still don't consider the pinephone integration abandoned and will maintain a quiet eye looking for updates. Until I come across something that shows activity prioritization on their channel I am going to indefinitely suspend my QA testing for this OS so I can expand into other candidates.

EDIT: Clarity, I know the OS in general isn't abandoned, but Dalton had bigger fish to fry.

EDIT 2: Changed title to add 'for pinephone'

That post is fairly old, and there have been plenty of updates since then. In the past week couple of weeks there have been no updates because of a bug on edge channel builds effecting Wayland iirc. However that was clearly resolved as two days ago there was a meaningful update, which most importantly added a screenshot button to the power dialog. Progress is slow and in fits and starts.

That is good to note. I find the UBPorts forum is just dreadful. I noticed a little work happening on another branch to upgrade to the 5.9 kernel.

If I understand correctly (and I might not,) they're doing a lot of work updating some of the code they inherited from canonical, partly targeting a 20.04 update (an updated ofono i think is on that roadmap), but also so they can more easily push things up to broaden the amount of community collaboration they can find. So things like lomiri are making their way into the hands of more devs. Stuff like that.

I know Dalton recently also helped the SailfishOS guys with pinephone audio woes in the same spirit.

Reading the telegram channel of Ubuntu touch on Pine64 explains a lot.
Unfortunately the people there are very busy, but I don't think the PinePhone has been abandoned.
Some things just take longer because of all the work. I am optimistic about the future of Ubuntu Touch on Pine64 :-)

There are constant work for UT. In fact, OTA-14 has just been released and although this isn't for the pine devices, the changes and fixes in this OTA will or are already in the Pinephone. There are many pine-specific issues though and I guess those are the basis of why people think UT is slowly progressing. I think many of these issues are trivial so it could take time but I believe someone is already working on the kernel upgrade. Qt5.12 upgrade is also in-progress which will bring performance improvements and I believe the camera improvements shown before. By the way, there's a recent fix that is notable, music can now play even with locked screen. It's still not perfect but it worked when I tried.

Yeah I just updated my post to add clarity. I just want to stress; I'm not criticizing the development group. Like most groups in the open source world they are killing it. This project is just a small part of their overall efforts and it happens to be what we are paying attention to.

It is awesome to see that music plays with the screen locked. I have never tested this, since it is not what I consider essential for this device to become a daily driver. I imagine it feels a lot like listening to a podcast on youtube. Once you switch apps it can be very annoying when the audio just stops. So clearing something as seemingly simple as that is probably a huge win and can certainly be desired feature for lots of people.
