Personally I don't like to cheerlead too much for any specific distro if only because different users have different tastes and needs.
However as meta-advice I have found that 32 or 64GB SD cards are getting pretty cheap and that the A-class ones (A1 or A2) perform much better than my older generation class 10 or U1 cards. Thus my advice would be to buy a large modern SD card (I am using these) and experiment with a various images and installers to see which one suits you best. If you find one you really like then you can install it to the eMMC in order to free up the SD card slot.
