Notebook-workstation for power users?

The issues I have are with software -- photo processing and statistical analysis -- and at present I'm haning off for a couple of months waiting for the first issues to be sorted and at that time I'll probably have a dead laptop that I need to replace.

Rant on: most CPUs we have can do almost anything you want to do at a reasonable speed. Bar gaming, and perhaps video processing. The issue is having a kernel that plays nicely with the software. If you think of it, a Chromebook assumes that the cheap processors we have can run anything via a web browser. Power users now are either running massively parallel systems, or gamers. Rant off.

If you have used Linux before and open source software, you won't even realise that you are not any longer on a X86 machine because they are identical on ARM and run natively. GIMP for photo processing and R Studio for statistical analysis are great open source applications you can run on Pinebook.

The problems start when you are trying to run proprietary software and drivers. If you stay away from them you are okay.

I haven't used windows or Apple OS for years now and I can do all my scientific work on Linux perfectly fine.
