I hope to submit patches to armbian as soon as I get some free time, but in the meanwhile I put the kernel and uboot binaries that I'm using on filebin:

You would need to have a bootable SD card that you would put the kernel image onto so that you can mount the emmc. Then you can install the new uboot onto the mounted emmc and copy over the new kernel to get a working system.
The uboot zip has the binary and a very simple script to install it. Make sure you check the script uses the correct device to write to for your setup.
Are you talking about to create my own installer with this patch? ;(
Will be patched in the next installer release?
