it was a problem with the connector to the screen.
I pushed it in and it started to work, but it stopped after a while. After more probing I found that I needed to keep pressure in one spot on the little board across the battery from the rest of the stuff (hidden under the strip of tape). My solution to keeping constant pressure there was to cut a small piece of eraser and tape it in place, that way the case will constantly push on it. Probably not the best solution, but seems to be working for now.
Once the screen was working i could flash it and it boots up.
