(Used signal-cli just on my Linux-Desktop-PC to activate the Client on the PinePhone, so I guess I will have to get it on the PinePhone as well...)

Did you try to receive the pictures on your Desktop PC? Did that work? If it doesn't work either the problem is something else, not Signal on your PinePhone.
