LG is shutting down their mobile production
#1
Would be happy if LG open sourced and donated to Pine64 all their work as they are completely shutting down a mobile division. I'm pretty sure that we all could benefit from such a move (LG including).

Here is my petition, feel free to sign it and share it:

A petition to ask them to open source their Android kernel is one thing, but asking them to open source patented software/hardware is not going to happen. Even if they never make another mobile phone ever again, there is too much value in their patents.

Also, why would they donate all these resources directly to Pine64? Pine64 is interested only in open hardware, why would they support a closed-source platform they have no means to manufacture? If anything you should be asking for this information to be released into the public domain.

In any case, by this point, they already have their plans in concrete, I would expect.

It never hurts to ask, especially if someone has a personal connection to a company executive, those patents might be most valuable to LG as tax deductible donations to a open source NGO, they can exchange the potential IP value for real cash savings.

I understand your good intentions, but quite frankly, it's all just a pipe dream, unfortunately. Sad
