UBOOT - Mainline not booting from SD card / BSP OK
Posted by: Anarethos - 12-30-2020, 12:36 AM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (1)

Hi!

I played a little bit with both version of UBOOT avilable in PACMAN in Manjaro 20.10.

Aside the fact that is you don't backup your extlinux.conf file you my end with an unbootable computer, I found that :

- When using the "mainline" (uboot-pinebookpro) version, booting from SD card don't works
- When using the "bsp" (uboot-pinebookpro-bsp) version, booting from SD card works

It is a normal behavior or is there something wrong in the way I flash the UBOOT?

Here is how i switch between both (on my eMMC)

For MAINLINE I do :

Code:
pacman -S uboot-pinebookpro
dd if=/boot/idbloader.img of=/dev/mmcblk2 seek=64 conv=notrunc,fsync
dd if=/boot/u-boot.itb of=/dev/mmcblk2 seek=16384 conv=notrunc,fsync
cp /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf.sav /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf
rm /boot/extlinux/*.pacnew

For BSP I do :
Code:
pacman -S uboot-pinebookpro-bsp
dd if=/boot/idbloader.img of=/dev/mmcblk2 seek=64 conv=notrunc
dd if=/boot/uboot.img of=/dev/mmcblk2 seek=16384 conv=notrunc
dd if=/boot/trust.img of=/dev/mmcblk2 seek=24576 conv=notrunc

cp /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf.sav /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf
rm /boot/extlinux/*.pacnew

Thanks!

  Pinecil Broken?
Posted by: skaaq - 12-29-2020, 01:11 PM - Forum: General - Replies (4)

Hello, juste received my pencil (and 2 other for family and friends) yesterday.

Mine worked on a laptop power supply (19V) no problem.

I try it on a usb power bank didn't know if qc3 or something else hit + button.

It seems to heat then a messsage that says low voltage or something, I removed the usb cable.

And back to 19V, nothing on screen. After didassembly I check 3v3, it was 0.7V and it draw 80ma when on 19V.

5v is 4.2v like in the schematics, so I desolder the 3v3 voltage regulator and it draw 2ma.

check continuity betwen 3v3 and gnd and got 5ohms not good, I replace the voltage regulator by a generic LD1117 3.3v.

here the grotesque picture.

[Image: 1S2-MfsJ1bWqdHaFkLEPkdNFBLiM7zQc5?e=down...5jusharing]

And its back to life sort of, it draw 200ma when idle the other are around 10ma. and the U1 chip FUSB302MPX is extremely hot.
the 3.3V is at 3V and it show 21 V instead of 19 it look "normal" considering the voltage divider.
my next step is to desolder the U1 and check for continuity between 3v3 and gnd but it have to wait until I can get to an air desolder station.

I will tell you that you should'nt try to make it work on 5V, I did it itentionaly but it can happen accidentaly.
I think as it know the voltage some sort of software protection could be implemented to avoid this.
Or I get a bad one, you tell me.

Thanks for reading.

The other 2 are working good.

Question Advice on streaming (DRM-friendly) OS
Posted by: jimsurvak - 12-29-2020, 10:12 AM - Forum: Linux on Rock64 - No Replies

Hello Pine64 forums!

I've got myself a Rock64 (4GB, v3) for Christmas & was curious if anyone would be willing to share their experiences with streaming media from the internet to this device. It will overwhelmingly be YouTube but occasional Netflix & Amazon Prime Video would be nice to have. I'm looking for suggestions because my Pinebook Pro has frequent stutters & performance problems with YouTube on 1080p60 video (though anything locally runs fine via VLC). I'm running the latest Manjaro KDE image, and given it's performance I'm hoping there might be a different OS with some better playback support? I haven't bothered to setup Widevine on the PbP it as I don't use it for Netflix.

The real objective is to replace my aging AppleTV. I don't really need screen mirroring/casting (the AirPlay feature), though.

If anyone has suggestions they'd be appreciated!

  Record sound

I seem to be unable to record sound with gnome-soundrecorder or any other recording software. Is this a known problem? Is there a way to fix it? Help would be greatly appreciated as i need voice recording on my phone for work.

Blinking red light for charger, no power-on
Posted by: bifo - 12-28-2020, 09:27 PM - Forum: Pinebook Pro Hardware and Accessories - Replies (11)

I've checked through the threads on this and so far attempted checking the battery connections.  I have a late summer 2020 pinebook pro which has been fairly reliable (aside from software boot issues) since receiving it, upgraded with a 128gb EMMC and an intel 660 NVME 512 drive, the latter working for several months now.  I left it plugged in yesterday after having it compile a lot of software on the Manjaro install on the EMMC, and discovered it dead.  The red light will blink, the green light even goes on if I leave it for some hours, but after checking the battery connection (I don't move it much at all, but it was suggested in an old thread) it still blinks as if it can't accept charge signals.  I've been charging it via both USBC and the AC adapter, no problems for months.

Any suggestions or questions for further troubleshooting?  The NVME doesn't actually get used until I run a shell script once logged in.

  PINE64 Combo Drive (CD-RW/DVD-ROM)
Posted by: pfunny - 12-28-2020, 07:34 PM - Forum: General - No Replies

Hello,

I want to suggest a new PINE64 project: a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive.

The patents for all types of CD drives (Read and Write) already expired and the patents for DVD-ROM (Read) drives will expire on 2023-06-08 (http://www.dvd6cla.com/list/list_03_03.html).
So a combo drive that can read and write CDs, as well as read DVD-ROMs can be sold starting 2023-06-08. A CD only drive can be sold today already.

The patents for reading other types of DVDs will expire on 2025-01-31:

  • 2025-01-31 for DVD-R (Read)
  • 2025-01-31 for DVD-RW (Read)
  • 2023-04-24 for DVD-RAM (Read)
Information from: http://www.dvd6cla.com/list/list_03.html

The patents for writing DVDs will expire on 2027-12-13:
  • 2027-12-13 for DVD-R (Write)
  • 2027-12-13 for DVD-RW (Write)
  • 2025-08-03 for DVD-RAM (Write)
Information from: http://www.dvd6cla.com/list/list_09.html

I think a slim type form factor for the drive with an accompanying SATA to USB drive enclosure would be best because it is the most compatible. It can be used in half height bays with an adapter as well as slim type bays often found in old laptops. Slim type drives also use less power so they can be powered over USB when used with an enclosure.

Hardware wise I think adding a laser that is strong enough to write DVDs with the optics required for writing dual layer discs would be good, it would make the drive future proof for 2028 when the patents for writing DVDs will have run out.

I've never worked close to hardware so I don't really know how to do any of this. My idea to get started is to buy a DVD drive and hook it up to a SOC but I don't even know how to do that. I'm motivated to do this because I have a bunch of old games on CDs and DVDs. Also I've spent most of my time writing high level languages but have recently had a lot of fun messing around in C and want to try out hardware development.

Question for PINE64 staff: What do you think? Is this possible? What would it take to make this happen?

Question for everybody: Wanna help make this happen? Any input?

Unable to boot off SD card
Posted by: gdsmit1 - 12-28-2020, 07:21 PM - Forum: General Discussion on PineTab - Replies (5)

I hate to have my first post as a request for assistance. But here I am.

I got my PineTab in early December.  My wife "let me" check it out to make sure it was working, then had me hand it over for my Christmas present.

So took ownership of it on Christmas.  First thing I noticed is that Ubuntu Touch is way slow with multiple issues.  I downloaded Mobian Phosh on the PineTab and burned it to a Micro Center branded micro SD card.  I powered down, put in the SD  card and powered up.  No lights, no sign of life.  I figured it could have been that I burned it incorrectly.  So I downloaded the image again and and burned it to a 64 Gig SanDisk Ultra.  Same problem.   Decided to try a smaller card.  Burned to a 4 Gig SanDisk micro SD card.  Same issue.  I looked at each card on my Ubuntu laptop and each card showed that the boot partition is set to bootable.

Are there any known issues booting from an SD card on the early adopters PineTab?  I thought maybe it was a hardware issue, but since I was able to burn the card on the tab, it's likely not that.  I attempted from both a 64 Gig and a 4 Gig SanDisk card, it's not likely an issue with the card.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Question New to Pinebook Pro and lots of questions!
Posted by: Anarethos - 12-28-2020, 04:56 PM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (2)

Hi everyone!

I just got my brand new Pinebook Pro a few days ago. I started to play with it and I must say that I like it.

I am mostly a Windows guy alghouth I played a little bit with Linux (I have a Rpi2, a NextCloud instance, etc.) mostly Ubuntu/Debian and CentOS.

I bought the Pinebook Pro for it’s « Open source » nature in design and the fact that there is a lot of different OS for it, etc.

And, that why I am writing now, I am ready to start playing with the different OS avalable.

Before doing that, I started to read the Wiki and a few forums post about the boot process, the differents flashing options, etc. And I am a little lost!

So here am I to ask some clarifications and confirmation of what I understand and a few more questions.

1 – Boot Order / eMMC
If I understand correctly, the SoC boot from eMMC first. Right now, the eMMC has a U-Boot loader on it that make the computer search the SD card for a bootloader and switch to it. If not found, it continue on the eMMC. If the u-boot bootloader on the eMMC become corrupted, the computer won’t boot, even from SD card. In that case we need to disable the eMMC from the switch under the laptop, boot from SD card, re-enable the eMMC and force redection (instruction from Wiki) and reflash it.

So, Am I right with my understanding of the boot process?
Are the instructions in the Wiki to redetect the eMMC works also for Manjaro? The Wiki says it is for Debian.

2 – Restoring a factory image of Manjaro

On first boot, the Pinebook asked me to create my user account, set hte root paassword, and select the langage. How do I restore the Manjora system on it to act the same way? I took a look at the script to install to eMMC from SD but the script seems to ask the question during the restore process. I would like to know how to restore the eMMC so it act as a new system on first boot.

Should I use an old Manjaro image (eMMC installer) or there is a way to use the new script to have it ask the questions only on next reboot?

3 – Creating a full image of the eMMC from Linux

What is the best way to create a image of the eMMC (when booted from SD card) that will includes everything on the eMMC including the current U-BOOT loader?

4 – Creating a full image of the eMMC from Windows

When using the eMMC to USB adapter, underr Windows, what is the best way to backup the whole eMMC including the U-BOOT bootloader?

5 – Restoring the full image of the eMMC from Linux including U-BOOT

What is the best way (command with parameterrs) to restore the eMMC from a previous backup (see previous question) including the U-BOOT bootloader and everything?

6 – Restoring the full image of the eMMC from Windows including U-BOOT

What is the best way to restore eMMC using USB to eMMC from Windows incldding the u-boot bootloader?

7 – Restoring a eMMC that is corrupted / Non working U-BOOT

Is there a way to backup only the U-BOOT part from the eMMC from Linux (or Windows using the adapter) to restore it if it becomes corrupted or a full image reinstall is always required?

8 – What are the mmcblk2boot0 and mmcblk2boot1 device?

LSBLK show me the eMMC device itself with the ROOT and the BOOT partition as mmcblk2. There is also 2 otherrs device, mmcblk2boot0 et mmcblk2boot1. Are there physical partition on the eMMC? Is the U-BOOT bootloder written there? When using DD to mmcblk2 does it write in that section of the chip also or not?

Thanks all! I know I ask alot but your help will be reallly appreciated to put some light on the differents things I read.

Have a nice day!

  Is PinePhone good for me?
Posted by: Gon - 12-28-2020, 04:50 PM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (10)

I write to you from Spain, and I have a few questions about PinePhone. I am a fervent user of linux system, using it daily on my computer. But I'm not an advanced user, and don't have high knowledge about it.

So the question is: I would love to buy PinePhone for me, is it possible with my linux level?

The other question is: are they going  to sell another Manjaro's version again? If not, is the KDE version easy to use? which is the easier OS to use?

And the ultimate: could I use Whatsapp on it?

Thanks a lot for your attention,

Waiting for your answer.

Re-do First Time Setup / Location Services Setting (How?)
Posted by: calinb - 12-28-2020, 03:31 PM - Forum: Mobian on PinePhone - Replies (3)

The "Location" section of the Mobian wiki says:
When the Mobian first time setup wizard asks if you want to send location data to Mozilla Location Services answer “Yes.”

I answered "No" to that question. Sad

I don't know how important it is WRT obtaining location and usable maps, but how do I "undo" my selection? I've searched these forums and also "grep-ed", "locate-ed" and "find-ed" on my Mobian system as best I can to locate the controlling proggy, script or configuration file to no avail or discovery.

Thanks for any help.
