  pinephone drops cellular network
Posted by: Rainer - 05-12-2021, 08:52 AM - Forum: PinePhone Hardware - Replies (28)

hello,

please excuse my ignorance, i'm not really sure sometimes what are hardware issues and what fall under the software category.

i'm using the latest (updated?) version of manjaro-arm and have noticed that my cellular network has disappeared suddenly. after i restart the network reappears. i'm not sure if this relates to my previous post on 'modem shows no carrier messages' which seemed to have stopped after updating. where can i find some log messages to begin to troubleshoot this issue?

i'm using the koodo/telus network in canada.

thanks.

PinePhone as portable music player with RME Babyface Pro USB audio interface
Posted by: Be. - 05-12-2021, 01:31 AM - Forum: PinePhone Accessories - Replies (4)

After over 5 years of owning my Babyface Pro I have finally figured out a practical way to use it outside on battery power thanks to the PinePhone. Despite the Babyface Pro being USB audio class compliant, it does not work with whatever Android puts on top of ALSA. I suspect that has something to do the alternate USB configuration which presents only 2 channels for iOS applications, but I have not actually looked into the problem. Anyway, I now have a solution with my PinePhone:

I am using the USB hub that comes with the PinePhone "convergence package" and plugging the Babyface Pro into it. I am plugging the battery into the USB-C Power Delivery port on the hub, which powers both the Babyface Pro and the PinePhone. The PinePhone charges really slowly from the hub, but importantly, it does not drain battery so it can keep playing for a long time.

I have my entire music collection, which is currently 174 GB of FLACs, on a 256 GB microSD card in the PinePhone. I set a fixed mount point for the microSD card in /etc/fstab so music players have a consistent path to scan for music (mounting from Profile or GNOME Files mounts to a different path each time and I'm not sure what determines that path). I have Elisa and Lollypop on my PinePhone. I prefer Elisa, which is what I use on my laptop, but it currently has an annoying bug with one time stuttering a few seconds into the start of tracks, so I am using Lollypop for now. There are several unrelated issues which prevent me from using the PinePhone as my daily driver phone for now, but I have figured out how to make it useful as a portable music player already so it's not just a fun toy.

The speaker is my trusty old Bose Sounddock Portable which is still working well after 10 years. This battery has a 20 V DC output so I can charge the Bose Sounddock Portable directly without needing an inverter and the bulky AC adapter that came with the Bose Sounddock Portable. Its capacity is huge with 266 Wh. I suspect I could use this setup over a whole weekend at a festival without needing to recharge the battery.

This whole setup fits in a normal size backpack and it isn't too heavy.

Notably, there is a faint high pitched ringing sound when everything is connected which goes away if I disconnect the battery from the Bose Sounddock Portable. I do not know what causes that but it is not too bothersome when music is playing. I would appreciate any suggestions to investigate or alleviate that.

docking station & usb mass storage question
Posted by: Rainer - 05-11-2021, 08:51 PM - Forum: PinePhone Hardware - No Replies

hello,

on my quest to transfer files to and from the pinephone i came across a post on a manjaro-arm forum that basically said use the docking station and a usb stick.

after connecting the usb to the docking station, i could find no way to access the device in 'index' file manager. after checking dmesg and seeing that sure enough it was there and up and running on sda1, i accessed it the old-fashioned way, creating a usb folder in 'home' and the 'mount' command on the terminal. i was just wondering if i hadn't misssed something? my linux mint automatically mounts my usb at /media or something like that.

and i must say that the docking station usb connection is extremely loose, it actually disconnected a couple of times while i was mounting my usb.

thanks.

  xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed
Posted by: rrowles2000 - 05-11-2021, 04:12 PM - Forum: General - No Replies

Hi,

I've been grinding away after 23 years away from Unix trying to 86 windows from my life.

So Far I've got Armbian/Ubuntu/Mate working overcoming various issues along the way.

This is a solid 6 days now and I'm stuck so if someone could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it....

I'm using an iiyama E2783QSU on HDMI-1, and trying new modes using xrandr

After getting seriously bored manually going through the options I wrote a little script to help.....

Code:
text=$(gtf $1 $2 $3)
search="\""

rest=${text#*$search}
rest=${rest#*$search}

xrandr --newmode $4 $rest
xrandr --addmode HDMI-1 $4
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode $4

Usage is therefore...

Code:
bash x.sh 1920 1080  60 "test-0001"

The current mode is...

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 4096 x 4096
HDMI-1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (0x43) normal (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 597mm x 336mm

        v: height 1080 start 1084 end 1089 total 1125           clock  60.00Hz

but if I try to create a duplicate mode or a higher res mode I just get an error but as you can see below "gtf" is not creating a matching mode to the current one that is working....

Code:
test-0001 (0x25e) 172.800MHz -HSync +VSync
        h: width  1920 start 2040 end 2248 total 2576 skew    0 clock  67.08KHz
        v: height 1080 start 1081 end 1084 total 1118           clock  60.00Hz

All the tests I have done 60 odd in total all fail with

Code:
xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

I am probably doing something obvious wrong but to be fair I am now losing the will to live Smile

If anyone can help point me in the right direction on this extensive voyage of discovery I would really really appreciate it.

  high battery drain on suspend/poweroff
Posted by: wiz - 05-11-2021, 01:41 PM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (5)

Hi,

I recieved my PineBook Pro a week ago. I use Manjaro ARM with KDE (the image that came with the laptop)
I noticed very high battery drain on suspend with systemctl suspend (50% ~8 hours) and even when powered off with sudo shutdown (20% ~20hours).

I'm very worried. Do you think my unit is faulty ?
Thank you

  Can't login after reboot
Posted by: dpli - 05-11-2021, 11:28 AM - Forum: Manjaro on PinePhone - Replies (2)

My battery recently went to zero and the phone shutdown while I was using it.

Now when I reboot the phone, I only see a mouse cursor and the desktop login page.

I can't reboot to the "mobile view".

What should I do? I can connect to SSH.

  WiFi Calling ?
Posted by: User 22007 - 05-11-2021, 07:09 AM - Forum: Manjaro on PinePhone - Replies (5)

I've been poking at my pinephone for the last few days - so far everything I use day-to-day works, but I can't find any guidance on getting WiFi calling up & running.

My network supports it, and I don't have to install an app or anything on my iPhone to have it working - so I'm not missing third-party software. I just can't find any UI settings for it on the pinephone / haven't found any terminal magic online yet.

Is there a command / etc. I need to use to sort out carrier settings on the pinephone, to get WiFi calling working ?

  Pinephone gamers case (like ODROID-GO)
Posted by: mitcoes - 05-11-2021, 04:25 AM - Forum: PinePhone Hardware - Replies (1)

ODROID-GO is a - much worse in specs - linux gaming device like a Nintendo Switch, it started at 80$ and now in Europe costs 120 or more.

There is demand for this kind of devices.

A Pinephone gamer edition, with the same hardware, but with a case with game pad,   and some retroarch configuration in the OS, would be a bestseller.

And if it is when the Pinephone 2 will arrive (with WiFi6, 5G, and NFC, I expect) even more

  Printing from Mobian
Posted by: johnd - 05-11-2021, 03:24 AM - Forum: Mobian on PinePhone - Replies (2)

What experiences have people here had with printing from Mobian (or any Pinephone
OS)?

I can print once only from Firefox-esr after a re-boot, then no printers show up
in Firefox or any other app. I have a RPi running a cups print server, which
at first allows any of 3 printers to be found, but after one print job, they are
not found.

I'd like to hear of any your ideas, or successes in printing.
